Shunya Hagiwara is a web designer and programmer with interdisciplinary expertise in programming and design. After working for Semitransparent Design, in 2012 he set up his own business. He's heavily involved in production-related work such as planning, conceptualization, direction, implementation, design, and operational work primarily in the areas of web design and digital art. Shunya Hagiwara served as a part-time lecturer at Tama art university since 2015, and received Japan Media Arts Festival Award as a member of IDPW.org. He is also a member of the organizing committee of the book event Trans Books.

鳥海氏は書体設計士として数多くの書体制作に関わる一方で、これまで京都精華大学や武蔵野美術大学、私塾「文字塾」などで活字デザインに関する教育や指導に当たってきた。本展では、その教え子でもある3名がアートディレクションを担当し、より感覚的かつ身体的に書体設計のことがわかる空間を作った。タイトル通り、ギャラリー内に所狭しと並べられた「もじ」の「うみ」に溺れることで、「みず」や「空気」といった、普段は意識することのない、私たちが必要としている日本固有の文字について、改めて考える機会を創出。

As a typeface designer, Osamu Torinoumi has been involved in the creation of numerous typefaces. At the same time, he has also devoted himself to education and guidance relating to typeface design at Kyoto Seika University and Musashino Art University as well as at his own private school, Mojijuku. This exhibition’s art direction was performed by three of Torinoumi’s pupils, who created a space in which visitors can acquire a more sensory and physical understanding of typeface design. As the exhibition title suggests, by offering visitors an opportunity to “drown” in a sea of lettering densely displayed throughout the gallery, the show offered an opportunity to focus renewed awareness on Japan’s unique and indispensable writing systems – something we Japanese normally take for granted, as we do with water and air.

鳥海修氏と本展キュレーションの堤氏による展覧会の見所について解説。展覧会は鳥海氏の原風景をヒアリングした漫画から始まる。鳥海氏はグラフィックデザインに活字を作る仕事がある事を知らなかったが、学生時代に小塚昌彦氏の「日本人にとって、文字は水であり、米である」という言葉を聞いて、ずっと心に留めていた庄内平野の水と空気を思い浮かべ、やるしかないと思ったと語る。鳥海氏が手掛けた書体総覧の中から、谷川俊太郎氏の詩の為に作った書体とお礼の詩を頂いた事を紹介。鳥海氏が力を入れるのは本文書体で、その理想は水や空気の様に、誰が作ったかわからないスッと文章が頭に入ってくることだと語る。『鈴木勉の本』は、鳥海氏が写研時代から字游工房時代に大変お世話になった鈴木氏の足跡を装丁家の平野甲賀氏の薦めで纏めた追悼文集だと紹介。最後は会場に再現された仕事机で、筆や硯を使い手で描いた文字をキーボードやマウスでアウトライン化する工程を映像で紹介。最後に堤氏から、キャッチ―な展覧会になっているので、デザインを学ぶ学生やデザイナーは勿論だが、活字について考えた事もない人にも是非観て欲しいと締め括った。

In this Gallery Talk Osamu Torinoumi and Takuya Tsutsumi, who curated the exhibition, offered comments on the show’s highlights. The exhibition evolved from manga based on scenes from Mr. Torinoumi’s life. Mr. Torinoumi said that originally he was unaware that the realm of graphic design includes type design. Then, when he was student, he heard how typographer Masahiko Kozuka had said that “to the Japanese people, characters are as vital to their lives as water and rice.” It called to his mind the clear water and fresh air of the Shonai Plain in Yamagata, where he grew up, and from that moment on, Mr. Torinoumi said, he decided creating type was what he would do. From the compendium of typefaces he had worked on, he then introduced a font he had created for a poem by Shuntaro Tanikawa, and the poem he had received as the poet’s expression of thanks. Mr. Torinoumi related that he focuses on creating type for the main text of a work, and the ideal he aims for is for the written text to be effortlessly absorbed by the reader without awareness of who created it – like water, like air. He then turned the topic to "Suzuki Tsutomu no hon," a memorial volume dedicated to typeface designer Tsutomu Suzuki, whom Mr. Torinoumi had sought advice from in the days he worked for Sha-Ken Co., Ltd. and JIYUKOBO Ltd. He had compiled this book, which traced Suzuki’s works throughout his career, on the recommendation of book designer Kouga Hirano. Finally, Mr. Torinoumi sat at a worktable placed in the gallery to resemble the one he actually uses. He showed a video describing how, using a keyboard and mouse, he creates the outlines of lettering which he wrote by hand using brush and inkstone. Mr. Tsutsumi closed the talk saying that the exhibition is filled with things to catch the interest not only of design students and designers, but even of people who have never given any thought to lettering before, so he hoped many people will come to see it.

鳥海修「もじのうみ：水のような、空気のような活字」展覧会解説動画

山形県生まれ。鳥海山の麓で育つ。書体設計士。多摩美術大学卒業後、1979年株式会社写研入社。1989年に有限会社字游工房を鈴木勉、片田啓一の3名で設立。1998〜2019年まで同社代表取締役。株式会社SCREENグラフィックソリューションズのヒラギノシリーズ、こぶりなゴシックなどを委託制作。一方、自社ブランドとして游書体ライブラリーの游明朝体、游ゴシック体など、ベーシック書体を中心に100以上の開発に携わる。2002年に第一回佐藤敬之輔賞、2005年にグッドデザイン賞、2008年に東京TDCタイプデザイン賞を受賞。2007〜2017年まで京都精華大学で書体設計に関する教育や指導に当たる。現在、私塾「文字塾」塾長、武蔵野美術大学非常勤講師。

Born in Yamagata Prefecture in 1955. Grew up at the foot of Mount Chokai. Type designer. After graduating from Tama Art University, he joined Shaken Co., Ltd. in 1979, and in 1989, he founded JIYUKOBO Ltd. with Tsutomu Suzuki and Keiichi Katada, and was its president from 1998 to 2019. He was commissioned to produce such works as the Hiragino series and Koburina Gothic for SCREEN Graphic Solutions. At the same time, he has been involved in the development of more than 100 basic typefaces for his own brand, such as Yu Mincho and Yu Gothic for the Yu Typeface Library. He received the first Keinosuke Sato Award in 2002, the GOOD DESIGN AWARD in 2005, and the Tokyo TDC Type Design Prize in 2008. From 2007 to 2017, he taught and supervised type design at Kyoto Seika University. Currently, he is the president of the private school Mojijuku, and an adjunct lecturer at Musashino Art University.

鳥海展で意識したのは、多くの人に向けてつくるということです。書体デザインや、グラフィックデザインの専門性よりも、ありとあらゆる人の身近な生活につながっているものとして鳥海さんの設計した文字を見てほしいと考えました。自身の活動でも、専門性を活かしつつ、他の分野との関わりを持ち続けるような仕事ができればと思っています。山形の環境から考えることで、万事全てのことが自身にも他者にもつながっていると改めて感じる機会になりました。 dddギャラリーの過去の展示作家で言えば、デザインしながら製本や印刷も手掛け、そして作家としても活動するような専門性にとらわれない立花文穂さんの「地続き」な活動には影響を受けています。ポスターに関して言えば、現在に近づくにつれてタイポグラフィで構成されたものが多くなっていく印象で、最初の方は、図像や写真、絵を大きく大胆に使われたものが多く、永井一正さんや田中一光さんのポスターは、展覧会の中身の断片のようでワクワクしますね。

The thing I focused on was bringing the Torinoumi exhibition to as wide an audience as possible. Rather than just specify the exhibition into a typeface or graphic design category, I really wanted everyone to see the characters designed by Torinoumi, which are linked so closely with us all. In my own work I leverage my individual skill, but I still try to consider ways to work that maintain connections with other creative areas. Considering the situation from Yamagata, where Torinoumi was raised, offered me a chance to rediscover the connection between myself and others in all things. Talking about artists from past exhibitions at ddd gallery, I was inspired by the fluid activities of Fumio Tachibana—he does graphic design, book design, and printing, never limiting himself to any specific field of speciality. For the posters, I had the impression many of the more recent ones were typographic in their composition, whereas many in the beginning made bold use of illustrations, photography and pictures. The posters of Nagai Kazumasa and Tanaka Ikkou made exciting use of fragments from their exhibition content.

「三木健展」では、“ from to”「〇〇から〇〇へ」をコンセプトにコミュニケーションデザインの思考プロセスをビジュアライズしました。それまでの仕事を再編集した200折のジャバラ型の立体物が会場を横断し、コンテンツの役目を担っています。平面から空間、また、デジタル環境からデザイン領域を横断的に捉える様々な仕事が交差し、それぞれが影響し合うことでまるで情報の建築物が組み立てられるような展示を計画しました。

I visualised the thought process of communication design in the concept “from to,” for the Ken Miki Exhibition. I reorganised all the work I had done into an accordion style 3D work consisting of 200 folds that ran right through the venue and displayed all my work. It was a crossover of various things, from 2D to space design; digital to design work. I planned the exhibition so each piece would influence other work and seemingly create a new information structure.

グラフィックデザインの展覧会は、基本的に成果展であり、それら以外に展示できるものといえばスケッチや指示書が限界です。これだと展覧会として発展性がないので、鳥海展では書体となって流通するまでのプロセスをいかに作品化し、構成できるのか、ということを考えました。私は現代美術のキュレーターですが、鳥海展ではむしろ、デザイナーのように取り組んだ展示だと思います。「わかりやすく、取りつきやすい空間」というテーマに設定し、「一般性」をすごく意識しました。 また、京都dddギャラリーは主にデザイン業界に向けた施設だと思いますが、「非西洋諸国の近代性」という点に着目して眺めています。たとえば日本語活字は、表音文字と表意文字が混ざった言語を無理やり正方形の中に収めて書体化し、なんとか西洋のアルファベットのように成立させた均一な連続体ですが、そもそもなぜ均質にする必要があるのか。鳥海さんは無意識的に「水のような米のような文字（＝すんなり入ってくる文字）」ということを仰っていますが、逆に言うと、実はわれわれは知らず知らずのうちに、鳥海さんのような書体設計士が想像する身体に標準化されている=制度化されているのではないか。グリッドシステムが奨励されたときもありますが、そもそもそんなに整然とさせる必要があるのか。見やすいデザイン、あるいは読みやすい本文組みとは、そもそも誰の身体に向けたことなのか。グラフィックデザイン領域において、そういった西洋近代への批判性はほとんど議論されることはないように思います。これらを扱う展覧会に期待しています。

Graphic design exhibitions usually showcase accomplishments; beyond that all that can be displayed are sketches and notes surrounding visuals. There’s no room to expand exhibitions this way though; for Torinoumi’s exhibition I came up with the notion that we could turn the process of creating a typeface itself into the exhibited work. I’m a contemporary art curator, but for Torinoumi’s exhibition I worked on it more like a designer, I feel. I established a theme of making it easy-to-understand with an easy-to-follow space design, while being constantly aware of a universalness. In addition, though Kyoto ddd Gallery was established primarily for the design world, they’re focused on the “modernity of the non-Western sphere,” I believe. For example, Japanese type takes the Japanese language with its mix of phonograms and ideograms, and creates typefaces by forcing them into squares in uniform succession that is somehow similar to the Latin alphabet; but what is all the homogeneity for in the first place? Torinoumi himself speaks of characters being “like water, like rice,” (i.e. we absorb them without resistance), but on the contrary, isn’t it the forms created by typeface designers like Torinoumi that we are all made to believe is standardized, or we are all institutionalized by? Grid systems do help induce them, but is all the systemisation necessary in the first place? Pleasant visuals and easy to read body typesetting are for whom exactly? In the field of graphic design, there is practically no discussion, or criticism of the West. I hope for more exhibitions dealing with this.

Born in Hyogo in 1988. Graduated from the Graphic Design Course at Kyoto Seika University in 2011. Started freelancing as a graphic designer in Kyoto after graduating. Main work includes the design of PR materials for arts and performance; also creates graphics for logos, products and typography. Has somehow survived up till now.

Osamu Torinoumi Making Type: Like Water, Like Air

gggから巡回となる本展は、資生堂やパルコなどの広告キャンペーンの名作をはじめ、映画や演劇のポスター、レコードジャケット、自著を含めた多様なブックデザイン他、主に1980年代のニューヨークへ渡るまでの仕事に焦点を当てた。制作過程の一環を垣間見ることのできる校正指示やアイデアラフなど、クリエイティブに対する情熱を伝える作品・資料を、石岡瑛子氏の言葉とともに展開。

 This exhibition covered an expansive range of Eiko Ishiokaʼs creative work. Included were her famed works created for ad campaigns for Shiseido and 
PARCO, film and theater posters, record jacket designs, and book designs. The exhibition focused on her works made prior to her move to New York in the early 1980s. Also on display were works and materials demonstrating Ishiokaʼs creative passion, especially her editorial instructions and rough sketches offering a glimpse into her creative process. The gallery was also decorated with numerous quotes from her many years working in creative design.

今回の展覧会の監修者であり、伝記『タイムレス-石岡瑛子との時代』を執筆した河尻亨一氏が展覧会の見所について語る。数多くの展示作品の中から、石岡氏が日本で初めて女性として日宣美賞を受賞した「シンポジウム　現代の発見」について、様々な形の模型を切って作った造形をアングルを変えて撮影したプリントを構成してできた事が近年発見された版下から分かったと言う。また、1970年代に10年に亘って担当したパルコのキャンペーンのひとつ、1977年の「あゝ原点。」は、最も撮影が困難であった。インドのある部族の女性の撮影交渉に１か月。許可が下りた際に砂漠の向こうから大挙して現れた女性達をモチーフに撮影されたと言う。モダンジャズ界の帝王マイルス・デイヴィスのアルバム「TUTU」のジャケットには、アーヴィング・ペンをカメラマンに起用し、マイルスの手や顔のモノクロ写真を使用。同アルバムはグラミー賞を受賞。最後に石岡の言葉の札を持ち帰る事ができる展覧会場のスペシャルコーナーを紹介。

Koichi Kawajiri, who served as director of this exhibition and who wrote a biography of Eiko Ishioka ("TIMELESS"), gave an introduction to the show’s highlights. Among the many works on display, he first focused on “Symposium: Discovery Today,” Ms. Ishioka’s series of posters for a fictional symposium for which she received a Japan Advertising Artists Club (JAAC) Award, becoming the first female designer in Japan to win that award. Mr. Kawajiri noted that from recently discovered paste-ups of the posters it became known that this work consisted of prints of various cut-outs photographed from various angles. He next turned to the posters Ms. Ishioka created in 1977 as part of PARCO’s promotional campaign, an assignment that continued for 10 years during the 1970s. The 1977 posters, Mr. Kawajiri noted, were the most difficult to photograph. They featured women from a tribe in Rajasthan, India, and it took a month for permission to shoot was granted. When permission was finally received, the lens was trained on a large group of women who appeared out of the desert. For the cover of jazz king Miles Davis’s “TUTU” album, Ms. Ishioka called on the services of photographer Irving Penn. The photos chosen focused on the artist’s face and hands, shot in monochrome. The album received a Grammy Award. Mr. Kawajiri closed the Gallery Talk with an introduction to the special area in the gallery where visitors could take snippets of Eiko’s words to keep.

ddd「SURVIVE - EIKO ISHIOKA ／石岡瑛子 デザインはサバイブできるか」展覧会解説動画

谷口氏が主宰する「チグニッタ」で行われたトークイベント「石岡瑛子を語る」の音源から、ダイジェストで配信できる様、編集。河尻氏は、第1章ではエイコさんがいかに凄い人であったかの数々のエピソードを披露。第2章では、北京オリンピックの衣装デザインについてインタビューし、気に入られた事。NYでインタビューした後、「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」で訃報を聞いた事を語る。第3章では、dddの展示の中からパルコの「あゝ原点。」や製版ディレクターもクリエイティブチームのメンバーとして扱った姿勢等を紹介。谷口氏からは、エイコさんが活躍したB1ポスター全盛期の時代から、今ではSNS等に広告やコミュニケーションが変わったと語る。また最終章で河尻氏は、パワフルさで圧倒的熱量を持つエイコさんは、底知れぬ矛盾を抱えつつ脆さも合わせ持つ、ラブリーな人でもあったと言う。そして今の悩める日本人にとって、エイコさんを知ることは役に立つはずだと締め括った。

The recording of a talk event held at Chignitta, a creative art space operated in Osaka by Yoshihiro Taniguchi, was edited in abbreviated form for online distribution. In Part 1, Mr. Kawajiri related a large number of anecdotes demonstrating what an amazing person Eiko Ishioka was. In Part 2, he spoke about how he interviewed Eiko in New York about her costume design for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and then shortly after that learned of her death in "The New York Times." In Part 3, from among Eiko’s works shown at ddd he talked about her posters for PARCO featuring Indian tribeswomen and about Eiko’s stance treating even the paste-up director as a member of her creative team. Mr. Taniguchi spoke about how advertising and communication have changed from the days when outsize posters flourished – the times when Eiko Ishioka was active – and today, in the days of social media. In the final section, Mr. Kawajiri commented on how Eiko, known for her amazing power and overwhelming energy, was a charming person who also had an aspect of fragility, harboring boundless contradictions. The talk concluded with the observation that knowing about Eiko Ishioka can serve a good purpose for Japanese today who are troubled and conflicted.

東京藝術大学卒。1961年、資生堂宣伝部入社。前田美波里を起用したポスターなどで頭角を現し独立。70年代にはパルコ、角川文庫など時代を揺るがす数々のキャンペーン、ファッションショーの演出、書籍デザイン他を手がける。80年代初頭に活動の拠点をニューヨークに移して以降は、美術及び衣装デザインなど、さらにボーダーレスに仕事の領域を広げ、舞台「M.バタフライ」でニューヨーク批評家協会賞、アルバム「TUTU」でグラミー賞、映画「ドラキュラ」でアカデミー賞を受賞するなど世界的評価を得る。作品集に『EIKO BY EIKO』『EIKO ON STAGE』、著作に『私デザイン』他がある。

After graduating from the Tokyo University of the Arts, Eiko Ishioka joined Shiseido as a member of their advertising division in 1961. She distinguished herself with her work on posters featuring actress Bibari Maeda and other such projects, before opening her own agency. In the 1970s, she created and produced a number of groundbreaking campaigns, fashion shows, and book cover designs for Parco, publishing brand Kadokawa Bunko and others. After relocating her base to New York in the early 1980s, she further transcended borders by expanding the scope of her work to areas such as production design and costume design, receiving international acclaim in the form of awards including a Drama Desk Award for set design on the Broadway play M. Butterfly, a Grammy Award for artwork on Miles Davis’s album TUTU and an Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. She has published the anthologies Eiko by Eiko and Eiko On Stage and authored a book entitled Watashi Dezain (“I Design”) among other works.

日本人のコミュニケーションの感覚は、白黒はっきりさせない曖昧なものだと考えます。グラフィックデザインにおいても、西洋のようなシステマティックなデザインではなく、有機的なフォルムをまとった日本らしい表現を好んでいます。 「真 and/or 善」展のポスターは、杉崎真之助氏とふたりでデザインし、それぞれの名前を表す「真」と「善」の文字を自身のスタイルでデザインしたものです。私がデザインした「善」の字は曲線を用いた有機的なフォルムを持ち、境界線をぼやかした曖昧なものになっています。これは「情感と湿度の造形」という考えに基づいたもの。グローバル化が進む時代だからこそ、私はグラフィックデザイナーとしてあえて日本人特有のコミュニケーションの魅力を追求していきたいと考えています。

I believe that intuition in communication between Japanese people has an ambiguity that does not define things as black and white. In regards to graphic design, Japanese prefer unique forms of expression with organic shapes, unlike the systematic design we see in the west. Both Shinnoske Sugisaki and myself designed the poster for the Truth And/Or Virtue Graphic Designs by Shinnoske Sugisaki and Yoshimaru Takahashi Exhibition together, each creating a styled character for the parts of our names, 真 (shin), and 善 (zen). I created an organic form for 善 with curves, to give it indistinct boundary lines. This is based on the idea of form with emotion and warmth. The world is globalizing, but I believe it’s important to adopt a stance to seek out a more appropriately Japanese form of communication through graphic design.

平野甲賀氏曰く、今回、彼が残した膨大な作品を整理する中、とくに気づいたことは、漫画のタッチの新鮮さ、描き文字のすばらしさ。本展ではスライド、ライトテーブルで作品を映像としても展覧。ひとつのモチーフを繰り返し描いて別の背景と組み合わせていく独特の手法や、鉛筆画を何度も描き分け、コピーを重ねながら墨色を色濃くしていく、或いは描いたイラストを切り分け、別の絵の上にコラージュを重ねていくといった創作過程についても紹介。

 Kouga Hirano, in sorting through this vast collection in preparation for this exhibition, says that he was drawn especially to the liveliness of Kojimaʼs　caricatures and the brilliance of his hand-drawn lettering. For this exhibition, his works were displayed through slide projection and as images viewed on light boxes. Visitors were also introduced to his various unique creative processes, for example: how he drew a particular motif in repetition and combined them with different backgrounds; and how he created multiple pencil drawings and overlapped them to achieve a progressively deeper black color.


今回の展覧会の企画・監修者である平野公子氏が小島武氏の魅力について語る。69歳で亡くなるまで膨大な量の絵を描き続けたイラストレーター。但し、その作風はこれが小島武だという固まったモノはなく、多様性が拡がっている。風の流れの様に、点が線となり面となっていく「サヨナラシリーズ」は、劇作家の別役実氏の本に使われていた。表紙では鮮やかな、これが小島武の“赤”という色が使われている。またPC以前の時代に鉛筆とコピー用紙を多用したのも小島武の特徴的技法。1992年から雑誌『エスクァイヤ』に連載された「武蔵野アマルコルド」にはこの手法が用いられたカットが使われている。また、沢木耕太郎氏の小説は、装丁：平野甲賀、イラスト：小島武による本が多数存在。その中で1点だけ飛行機が飛び立つ後ろ姿が使われた原画が見つかっておらず、是非とも見つけ出したいと語る。是非、過去にない規模の作品を目の当たりにする事ができる展覧会を見に来て、小島武の魅力に触れて欲しい、と締め括った。

Kimiko Hirano, who was in charge of the planning and supervision of this exhibition, spoke about what makes Takeshi Kojima’s works so appealing. Mr. Kojima was an illustrator who continued to create a vast volume of works straight up until his death at the age of 69, and yet he did not have one definitive style but rather produced works of great diversity. Kojima’s “Sayonara” series, in which, like the flow of the wind, points become lines, and lines become surfaces, were used to illustrate a book by playwright Minoru Betsuyaku. The cover features a brilliant red of the kind only Kojima could create. Takeshi Kojima is also remarkable for his unique production method in which, in the days before computers, he made abundant use of pencils and copy paper. Illustrations made by that method were used in “Musashino Amarcord,” a serialized feature of the Japanese edition of "Esquire" magazine that commenced in 1992. Kojima also provided the illustrations for numerous novels by Kotaro Sawaki, with book design performed by Kouga Hirano. Among them, there is one featuring an illustration by Mr. Kojima of an airplane taking off, viewed from the rear. It is the only illustration for which the original drawing has yet to be located, and Ms. Hirano expressed her strong hope that this work will be found. She closed with the hope that many people will come to see Takeshi Kojima’s works firsthand at this exhibition of unprecedented scale, to get to know what makes his works so appealing.

満州生まれ。北九州に引き上げ後は、高校まで博多で暮らす。映画三昧の日々であった。上京後、桑沢デザイン研究所に通う。音楽、演劇、広告、出版と多彩にイラストレ－ションとグラフィックで関わる。62年からフリーのイラストレーターとして活躍し、93年には第24回講談社出版文化賞(さしえ賞)を受賞。主な仕事に、アートシアター新宿文化／小室等／井上陽水／高田渡／『Number』表紙／『話の特集』／『ニューミュージック・マガジン』／『小説新潮』／など多数。

Born in Manchuria. After being repatriated to Kitakyushu, Kojima lived in Hakata until high school, where he became immersed in cinema. He moved to Tokyo, where he attended Kuwasawa Design School. His illustrations and graphics cover a wide variety of genres, such as music, the stage, advertising, and publishing. From 1962, Kojima worked as a freelance illustrator, and in 1993 he was presented with the 24th Kodansha Publishing Culture Award in the Illustration category. His major works include projects with Art Theatre Shinjuku Bunka, Hitoshi Komuro, Yosui Inoue, and Wataru Takada, and his art has featured on the cover of "Number" magazine, as well as in "Hanashi no Tokushu," "New Music Magazine," "Shosetsu Shincho."

Takeshi Kojima: One Dream

シュミット氏の初来日は1966年。一度はヨーロッパへ戻るが、1977年に再び来日。以来、情報伝達とフリーフォルムという二元性と向き合いつつデザイン活動を行い、商業作品も個人的な作品も、アプローチは違えど分け隔てなく取り組む。本展では、氏の有名無名の作品やその制作プロセスを、彼がその探求の中で出会った人々の面影と共に辿った。最後までごく個人的でありつづけた、人間味あふれる彼のタイポグラフィの軌跡を展覧。

He came to Japan for the first time in 1966. He returned to Europe for a time but opted to return to Japan in 1977. From that time, Schmid devoted himself to design work, always addressing its duality as a conveyance of information and free form. Although he embraced different approaches to commercial work and to his private work, he devoted himself equally to both realms. This exhibition featured a multitude of his works, both those well known and obscure, and also described his creative processes and the people he encountered during his artistic explorations. Throughout his career, Schmidʼs typography, though highly 
individualistic, exuded great warmth.

今回の展示企画を担当した阿部氏、ニコール氏と展示デザインを担当した長谷川氏が、それぞれの立場から、どのように回顧展としての展覧会を具体化していったかについて語る。阿部氏は初めに膨大なシュミット氏の作品の調査を行い、才能ではなく努力の人であったと語る。ニコール氏からは、彼がよく口にした言葉から展覧会タイトルが決まったと言う。長谷川氏は、時系列に多くの作品、そして制作の試行錯誤の痕跡を辿れる様にスケッチなども含めて展示し、世界各国で活躍した時代時代をオーバーラップさせて展示する為、軽量なパンチングメタルのパネルを採用した経緯を説明。またシュミット氏が様々な人との繋がりの中で作品を制作したことが伝わる様、スナップ写真や書簡も適宜配置した。ニコール氏は、展覧会がシュミット氏を巡る一つの物語となったと締め括った。

The three participants spoke on how they went about putting together this retrospective exhibition in their respective capacities: Hirofumi Abe and Nicole Schmid, as members of the team in charge of the exhibition’s planning, and Tetsuya Hasegawa, as the exhibition’s designer. Mr. Abe said he began by undertaking a survey of Helmut Schmid’s vast body of works, which made him conclude that Schmid’s brilliance came by effort rather than natural talent. Ms. Schmid said the exhibition title was chosen because of how often her father exhorted with the words “try try try.” Mr. Hasegawa explained how he decided to adopt panels made from lightweight perforated metal sheets: in order to create an overlapping, chronological display of Schmid’s activities around the globe at different times, including his many works as well as his sketches and other items tracing Schmid’s processes of trial and error. He added that he placed various snapshots and letters among the displays in order to convey how Helmut Schmid’s creative work derived from his connections with many different people. Ms. Schmid closed by saying that this exhibition, in its final form, was a story all about Helmut Schmid.

ddd ヘルムート シュミット タイポグラフィ: トライ トライ トライ 展覧会紹介

生前交流のあった著名な関係者が語る。白井氏は、シュミット氏の著作は自分への道標と語る。ラース氏はシュミット氏の著作『バーゼルへの道』は『ルーダーへの道』だと言う。トイフェル氏は『タイポグラフィ・トゥデイ』を全てコピーしたエピソードを披露。阿部氏は展覧会企画を通じ、シュミット氏は“筋”のある人と評す。ゲイコ氏はシュミット氏の評価はミニマリズムと「目で見る音楽」を作曲した事だとする。室賀氏は、1980年代の『タイポグラフィ・トゥデイ』が未だカッコいいのはなぜ？という疑問がタイポグラフィへの興味の入口と語る。ヴィクター氏は、シュミット氏が理解されていなかったから、知る為のプロジェクトを大学で開始。ニコール氏は、ルーダーの『タイポグラフィ』日本語版デザイン制作途中で父が亡くなったが、最初にステップを示してくれたので最後まで取組めたと言う。原氏は、真っ白な紙にインクを置く事の緊張感を教えてくれたのがシュミット氏の仕事だと語る。

Various well-known people who were associated with Helmut Schmid spoke about him. Yoshihisa Shirai described how Schmid’s publications have guided him in his own career. Lars Müller suggested that Schmid’s "der Weg nach Basel" [The Road to Basel] was in many ways “The Road to Ruder.” Philipp Teufel related how he had once made a xeroxed copy of Schmid’s entire "Typography Today." Hirofumi Abe said that in planning this exhibition he came to recognize Schmid as a man of strong will. Fjodor Gejko compared Schmid to a minimalist composer of “music seen with the eyes.” Kiyonori Muroga told how he had originally become interested in typography when he began wondering why the typography in "Typography Today," written in the 1980s, is still so good-looking. Victor Malsy revealed that it was because Helmut Schmid wasn’t understood that he started a project at his university to make students familiar with him. Nicole Schmid noted that her father had died while designing the Japanese edition of Emil Ruder’s "Typographie," but she was able to complete the design because when he began the job, he had indicated what steps to follow. Kenya Hara stated that it was Schmid’s work that had taught him the tense excitement of applying ink to pristine white paper.

オーストリア生まれ。西ドイツで植字工見習いを終了後、スイスのAGS（バーゼル工芸学校）で、モダンタイポグラフィの泰斗エミール・ルーダーや、ロベルト・ビュヒラー、クルト・ハウエルトのもとで学ぶ。バーゼル、西ベルリン、ストックホルム、モントリオール、バンクーバー、大阪、デュッセルドルフで働いた後、1977年より大阪在住。大塚製薬の医薬パッケージやポカリスエット、IPSAや資生堂MAQuillAGEのブランドアイデンティティをはじめ多数のデザインを手掛ける。同時に、『タイポグラフィック・リフレクション』などの自主出版活動も行う。2000 年より2010 年まで神戸芸術工科大学にて、2006 年から1年半はソウルの弘益大学校にて教鞭をとる。

Born in Austria. Completing a compositor apprenticeship in West Germany, he studied under Emil Ruder – the master of modern typography – Robert Büchler, and Kurt Hauert at AGS (The Basel School of Design) in Switzerland. After passing through Basel, West Berlin, Stockholm, Montreal, Vancouver and Düsseldorf, he finally settled down in Osaka in 1977. Schmid’s work ranges various fields including editorial design, packaging of ethical drugs and visual identity for brands such as Pocari Sweat sports drink (Otsuka Pharmaceutical), MAQuillAGE (Shiseido) and IPSA. He also produced independent publications in parallel, such as Typographic Reflections. Schmid taught at Kobe Design University from 2000 to 2010, and Hongik University in Seoul for a year and a half from 2006. 

「真 and/or 善」展が開かれた2000年代の大阪は、カウンターとしての大阪というものがまだあった気がします。当時は僕も尖っていたので、プロデュースしていたCREAMROOMというギャラリーの展示をわざわざ松井桂三さんの企画展のオープニングに合わせたりしていました。そのような態度を面白く思ったのか、次の展開を模索していたdddギャラリーから展覧会の話があり、高橋善丸氏とハンブルク美術工芸博物館（ドイツ）で行った展覧会を再構成したのが本展です。松井さんの時代にあまり大阪のデザイナーがピックアップされなかったので、やんちゃな意思表示として大阪のデザイナーを紹介する「Graphic West」シリーズを高橋氏と共に提案しました。批判というよりも、尊敬のあまり「かまってほしい」という弟的な気持ちですね。 高橋氏とふたりでデザインしたポスターは、はじめは「真」の文字も太く、「善」の字とバランスをとったものでしたが、大きさが一緒なら線を細くして大きさで高橋氏に勝とうと考えました（笑）。グラフィックデザインとは、ルールの中でのゲームだと考えているので、そのゲームを楽しもうと思った訳です。大阪人の気質か、「すんなり」「真っ直ぐ」にはいかず、すべてあまのじゃくにアプローチしてしまいましたね。主流に対して少し曲がったオルタナティブ指向とでもいうのか。

When the Truth And/Or Virtue exhibition was held in the 2000s, I think people in Osaka still believed Osaka offered a counterculture to Tokyo. I was a little aggressive back then. So, I intentionally held exhibitions at the Creamroom gallery which I helped run, at the same time as the opening of the exhibitions at ddd gallery which Keizo Matsui curated. Maybe ddd gallery found it interesting, so they invited me for their exhibition, and that’s how Truth And/Or Virtue ended up being a reorganized version of the exhibition Yoshimaru Takahashi and myself had at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (Germany). Designers from Osaka had never really been chosen in Mr. Matsui’s era, so Mr. Takahashi and myself took the mischievous step of suggesting the Graphic West series, which would introduce designers from Osaka. It wasn’t criticism at all; we just felt like younger brothers craving a little attention and respect. I designed the poster with Mr. Takahashi; at first we created a balance between the two characters 真 (truth) and 善 (virtue), but I decided that if the size was going to be the same then I would make the lines of 真 thinner and try to beat Takahashi on space used (laughs). I see graphic design as a game played within certain rules; you have to enjoy yourself. Maybe it’s my Osakan disposition, but I never used to take the straight path and avoid trouble; my approach was total perversion. It was probably a slightly warped alternative direction in response to the mainstream.

「トライ トライ トライ」はヘルムートがよく人に贈った言葉です。タイポグラフィのみで構成すること、遠くから見たときにただの白い紙に見えないこと、だけを決めて、特にアイデアを持たずタイトルを組み始めました。紙面の中の文字のボリュームを意識すると、自ずと改行して配置するかたちとなり、一体感を出したかったので、一部重ねることにしました。このときはまだヘルムートが亡くなってそう時間も経っておらず感傷的だったのか、「try try try」の文字が空に飛んでいくようなイメージになりました。 ヘルムートは、デザインするときはいつも、あるべき姿を探していました。「制約の中の自由」という言葉もよく使っていました。内容と向き合って、形を導き出す。彼のこれらの考えにはとても影響を受けていて、この告知物も同様の思考で生まれたと思っています。

Helmut often bestowed people with the words, “try try try.” I approached the title design purely with typography: the only idea I had was that from a distance it shouldn’t just look like white paper. I wanted to bring out a sense of unity by arranging things with natural line breaks, and layered part of the design, while keeping the type volume in mind. It had been only a short while since Helmut’s passing and I was still sentimental. Maybe that’s why the letters ‘try try try’ appeared as though they were floating in the sky. Helmut would always strive to find the most ideal form when he was designing. He often used the words “freedom in restrictions.” Only when you understand the content can you deduce form. I was highly influenced by his thought process, and I believe that is how I came up with the idea for the poster.

東京以西（あるいは以外）のグラフィックデザイナーと協働する実験的展覧会シリーズGRAPHIC WEST。9回目となる今回は、韓国のグラフィックデザイナー・デュオ、Sulki & Minとのコラボレーション。ソウルを拠点にしながら従来的な韓国／アジア的なデザインの枠組みを超えた、国際的かつ批評的な活動を行うチェ・スルギとチェ・ミンの思考に迫った。いわゆるクライアントワークだけでなく、展覧会用の作品制作や出版活動、映像、ウェブ制作、翻訳、執筆など、現代のグラフィックデザイナーの関心にあるほとんどすべての領域で高レベルの作品を発表しつづける二人の、活動を始めた2000年代半ばから現在に至るまでの作品を網羅的に紹介。

GRAPHIC WEST is a series of experimental exhibitions produced in collaboration with graphic designers who are based westward {or outside) of Tokyo. The ninth event in the series was a collaboration with Sulki & Min, a duo of Korean graphic designers. The exhibition focused on 1he philosophy of this pair who, although based in Seoul, engage in international, critical activities transcending the framework of conventional Korean and Asian design. They continuously create superlative works in almost all areas that today's graphic designers are interested in: not only works designed for a client, but also works prepared for exhibitions, publishing activities, video/internet production, translation/writing, etc. The exhibition introduced an extensive selection of Sulki & Min's works spanning from the mid-2000s, when they launched their careers, up to the present.

パンデミック下で会場に来られなかったスルギ＆ミンによる自己紹介と本展の解説。彼らのこれまでの個展は、特定のテーマを探り掘り下げるものだったが、本展は2005年から現在までのすべての作品を広く見せる事で、彼らを知ってもらうきっかけとなる事を目的とした。告知物やハンドアウトに使用したスプレッドシートをキービジュアルとしたのは、彼らのプロジェクトは常にスプレッドシートを用いて進行されているからだという。親交のあるキュレーターの後藤氏は、彼らとオンラインで綿密に協働する事で展覧会を企画。会場では『作品解説』や『アイデア』特集号を補完メディアとして配置しより深い理解を支援。展示デザイン担当のNo Architects西山氏は、展示ではなく提示をコンセプトに彼らのウェブサイトの作品背景に用いられたホワイトノイズをガルバリウム鋼板で再現。スプレッドシートに基づく年代順配列により、作家性よりも作品性を伝えたという。オンラインを用いながら、相互の信頼関係により満足のできる展覧会になったとスルギ＆ミンが締めくくった。

Sulki & Min explained their approach to their exhibition. Whereas their previous solo exhibitions specific themes have delved deeply into for this exhibition they were presenting a broad overview of all their works created since 2005, as a way for people to get to know them. The reason they used a spreadsheet motif as the key visual in the exhibition's publicity materials, was their projects were always carried out using such spreadsheets. Followed by curator Tetsuya Goto, who has been on close terms with the duo since 2011, to foster deeper understanding, he had added supplementary materials in the gallery: explanations of individual works and the feature that appeared in "IDEA" magazine. Hiroshi Nishiyama of NO ARCHITECTS, who was in charge of the exhibition design, spoke on how he had reproduced on　galvalume steel sheets the white noise that Sulki & Min use in the background of their digital works, favoring a focus on presentation over display Mr. Nishiyama said he was able to emphasize the works rather than the artists. Sulki & Min commented that they were able to achieve a very satisfactory exhibition thanks to the relationship of mutual trust achieved through online communication in the planning phase.

ddd GRAPHIC WEST 9: Sulki & Min 展覧会解説

デザイナー原田氏が視た展覧会を視線カメラで撮影。後藤氏の進行で、原田氏、西氏のゲスト2人が動画を見ながら解説。コロナ禍を受け来場できない方にも疑似体験できる様に企画された。各自、作家との交流の歴史を紹介。続いて視線カメラ映像を見つつバーチャルに鑑賞。原田氏は個々の作品より先に展示構成から見始めるという。随時、後藤氏が作品について解説。原田氏は、年代順の配置から作家の興味の遷移が感じられると言う。ポスターには展覧会用に日本でオンデマンド印刷されたモノも多く、作家のこだわりの所在が垣間見られる。後藤氏によると書籍は手に取れないが、適宜見開きに展示。西氏は十分世界観が伝わったという。会場の映像展示は、印刷データを再利用してプログラムによる自動生成で反復の無いコラージュ作品。作家の思考方法が感じられる。ほぼ全作品が作家のウェブサイトで見られる中、今回の展示は展覧会でこそ感じられる作品を通じた作家への信頼感とリアルなソウルのグラフィックデザインシーンだと原田氏は語った。

This Gallery Tour was shot from the perspective of Yuma Harada, an Osaka based graphic designer, using a wearable camera. Curator Tetsuya Goto served as moderator with Mr. Harada and Madoka Nishi as guest commentators watching the recording. The presentation opened with the participants each introducing their exchanges with Sulki & Min to date. Next, while watchin the video filmed from Mr. Harada's perspective, they observed the works on display virtually. Mr. Goto continually interspersed his comments as curator. Mr. Harada said that from a chronological arrangement he gets a sense of the transitions in an artist's interest. Of the posters on display, many had been printed on demand in Japan for the exhibition, offering insight into the artists' strong preferences. Ms. Nishi said the artists' worldview was fully conveyed. The video displays were nonrepetitive collages automatically generated by computer program reusing printing data. Mr. Harada remarked that although nearly all the works can be viewed on Sulki & Min website, the gallery show offered an understanding of Seoul's true graphic design scene and the trust toward these artists that can be sensed only through works in an exhibition setting.

Sulki & Min（チェ・スルギとチェ・ソンミン）は韓国・ソウルを拠点に活躍するグラフィックデザイナー。国立現代美術館 [MMCA] やソウル市立美術館、国立アジア文化殿堂[ACC]、BMWグッケンハイム・ラボ、Munhakdongne（出版社）、そしてMass Studies（設計事務所）などをクライアントに持つ。これまでに国内外の数多くの展覧会に参加。また、作品がMMCA果川館（韓国）やM＋（香港）、クーパー・ヒューイット・スミスソニアン・デザイン・ミュージアム（アメリカ）、パリ装飾芸術美術館（フランス）、そしてヴィクトリア＆アルバート博物館（イギリス）のパーマネントコレクションに収蔵されている。スルギは桂園芸術大学校で准教授を、ソンミンはソウル市立大学で教授を務めている。

Sulki and Min (Choi Sulki and Choi Sung Min) are graphic designers based in Seoul, South Korea. Their clients include the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Seoul Museum of Art, Asia Culture Center, BMW Guggenheim Lab, Munhakdongne, and Mass Studies. They have participated in numerous exhibitions in Korea and abroad, and their work is included in the permanent collection of MMCA, Gwacheon; M+, Hong Kong; Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York; Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris; and Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Sulki is an associate professor at Kaywon University of Art & Design, and Sung Min is a professor at the University of Seoul.

「Graphic West 5: type trip to Osaka | typographics ti:#270」（2013）のデザインを担当したのは、完全に行きがかり上のことでした。この展覧会は日本タイポグラフィ協会の広報誌『typographics ti:（以下『ti:』）をベースにしたもので、「type trip」をテーマに２年にわたってアジアのグラフィックデザイナーを取材した成果を、空間に立ち上がらせようと試みたものでした。『ti:』のメンバーはほぼ全員グラフィックデザイナーで、編集長兼キュレーターとして誰に頼むかを悩んでいる内に時間がなくなり、結局自分でやることになりました。 『ti:』の表紙は東洋占術の「八卦」をモチーフにアジア各都市のデザイナーにデザインしてもらったので、ポスターにはそれらの八卦の図像をすべて配置し、各号で使われていた色をそのままグラデーションにしました。「dddデータベース」展の広報物のデザインも私によるものですが、こちらもこれまでのすべての展覧会ポスターを、同じサイズでポスター〜チラシ〜ポストカードに配置したものです。約10年経ってもアプローチが同じというのが少し恥ずかしいですね。 Graphic Westシリーズでは計３回展覧会を企画させてもらいました。やはり個人的には思い入れがある展覧会シリーズです。「dddデータベース」展のお話をいただいたときも、このシリーズに関わった関西のデザイナーの人たちには、ポスターのセレクションとコメントで参加してほしいと思いました。西日本だけでなく、海外を含む東京以西に広く開かれたdddギャラリーならではの企画展として、今後の展開にも強く期待します。

I came about doing the design for Graphic West 5: type trip to Osaka | typographics ti:#270 by pure circumstance. The Japan Typography Association’s journal, typographics ti: (abbreviated, ti:) served as the basis for the exhibition: it was an attempt to take the result of two years of interviews with Asian graphic designers under a theme, ‘type trip’, and organize it into an exhibition space. Almost all members of ti: were graphic designers; I was both editor-in-chief and curator, but I ran out of time in my considerations of who to ask, so I ended up doing it myself. The cover for ti: used a motif of the eight trigrams (known in Japanese as 八卦, or hakke), which are used in the East for fortune telling. We asked a different designer from each city in Asia to design the cover using a trigram; I made an arrangement of all the eight trigrams in the poster, and combined all the individual colors used into a gradient for the background. I also did the design for the PR materials for the ddd Database exhibition; in the same way, I took all the previous exhibition posters and arranged them all at the same size into a single poster, pamphlet, and postcard. It's a little embarrassing that even after 10 years, my approach was still the same. I have been involved in three exhibitions in the Graphic West series. I now have an emotional attachment to it. When I was asked to help with the ddd Database Exhibition, I wanted the designers from Kansai that had been involved in this series to participate by choosing posters and giving commentary. I really hope to see more open and experimental exhibitions at ddd gallery, not just from West Japan, but looking out West from Tokyo, and beyond.

グラフィックデザインの展覧会の主役と言えば、今も昔も変わらず紙のポスター。デザイン教育機関でも、未だポスターは中心的な課題のひとつです。しかし、現在の仕事において紙のポスターをデザインする機会は大幅に減ってしまいました。街の広告物の主役は、デジタルサイネージ（＝ムービングポスター）。このような状況のなか、展覧会で紙のポスターをどう扱うかは大きな課題でした。そもそも美術展における絵画の代替物のように扱われるポスターには違和感を持ち続けてきたので、これまで企画した展覧会でもいわゆるポスター展の見え方にはならないように注意してきました。しかし、私たちの生活の中心にインターネットが位置する今、あらためて過去のポスターを見ると、それらが持つ物質性や印刷加工の迫力に素直にワクワクさせられます。アナログレコードやカセットテープが再評価されるように、今や街で見る機会が少なくなった紙のポスターが持つ、画面では味わえない触覚的／視覚的テクスチャーを評価基準にしてセレクトしました。

Physical paper posters remain, to this day, a principal part of graphic design exhibitions. They also remain central to assignments handed out at design schools. In the design field however, there has been a substantial reduction in opportunities to design for paper posters. The streets are now full of digital signage (i.e. moving posters). One of the biggest challenges we face today is how to deal with paper posters in exhibitions. I still feel uncomfortable about posters being treated like substitutes for paintings in art exhibitions; that’s why I have always been careful that the exhibitions I organize don't end up appearing as poster exhibitions. Even with the internet fixed front and center in our modern lives, it’s honestly exciting looking back at old posters again; they each harbor a very impressive materiality and printing process. Society is rediscovering analogue records and cassette tapes—though we may have fewer chances to see them on the streets anymore, in selecting paper posters I thought we could rediscover the tactile and visual textures they hold, which cannot be felt in digital images.

食という生物の根幹をなす活動は、人々の生活の変化とも密接に繋がっている。人々の食への関心対策は美食やグルメにとどまらず、栄養価、安全性、さらには生産地／生産者、フェア・トレードといった食の取引や流通など多岐に及んできている。これからの生活や未来を探る上にも不可欠だといえよう。ポスターをはじめとするグラフィックデザインには、時代を反映した多くの食の表象が見て取れる。戦後間もないころのチョコレートのポスターからは菓子へのあこがれや喜びが、野菜や果物の美しい表現には、大地への畏敬や感謝の念が含まれているかのようである。デザイナーたちが食の力を伝えるべく思い思いに腕をふるったポスターや雑誌に見られる表現を通して、現代の食と人間との関係性を探る展示となった。

Eating is an activity essential to all living beings, and food is closely connected to changes in our lifestyles. As humans, our interest in food is not limited to matters of taste - a quest for delicious or gourmet food - but extends broadly to considerations of nutritional value, safety, and even matters relating to trade and distribution: where and by whom it was produced, whether it is traded fairly, etc. Issues surrounding food thus inevitably affect how humanity will live and thrive in the future. Posters and other graphic works contain numerous representations of food mirroring the times when they were created. Posters of chocolate in the immediate postwar period, for example, reflect the special yearning for and joy derived from sweets in 1hose impoverished times, and works that beautifully depict fruits and vegetables evince a humble respect and appreciation toward the earth that produces them. Through this exhibition of posters and magazine illustrations painstakingly crafted by designers to convey the power of food, visitors were able to probe our relationship with food today.

まず展覧会を企画した学芸員が「食」というテーマで収蔵品の中から選んだ作品から何を伝えたかったかを語る。そして展示作品の中から3作品について、作家と作品を解説。一つ目の大橋正氏によるキャラメルの広告作品は、終戦後、漸く始まった菓子の自由販売の中で、幾何学模様を使ったモダンなデザインが新しい時代を感じさせる。二つ目の青葉益輝氏の作品は、広告ではなく、反戦メッセージを直接的なメッセージを直接的なビジュアルとコピーで表現。但し10ヶ国語で示された広島原爆投下についての文章が、広く世界へ問題提起を目指す氏のソーシャルデザインへの立場を伝えている。三つ目の福田繁雄作品は、遊びやユーモア、ウィットや皮肉をだまし絵やトリックアートで表現した作家の展覧会ポスター。ここでも世界中の誰もが知るアート作品をモチーフとすることで世界中にメッセージを伝えようという意図がうかがえる。動画をきっかけに来場して多くの作品を鑑賞して欲しいとコメント。

Ms. Morizaki discussed what she sought to convey from the works selected from the DNP Graphic Design Archives collection on the theme of "food". She commented on three of the works and their designers. The first was an advertisement for caramel candy by Tadashi Ohashi. Created early in the postwar era, when the sale of candy and confections was freed from wartimes sumptuary constraints, it features a modern geometric pattern design that suggests the arrival of a new era. The second work, by Masuteru Aoba, wasn't an advertisement but rather a visual with written copy directly expressing an anti-war message. The text on the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, written in 10 languages, conveys his stance toward social design, his aim to make the whole world think about this critical issue. The third work was a poster created by Shigeo Fukuda. The work employs trompe-l'oeil, or trick art, and is filled with humor wit and irony. The designer uses motifs familiar to everyone conveying
his message worldwide. Ms. Morizaki hoped that the video would inspire visitors to come to the gallery and see many works.

数多くの企業や団体のオリジナルのタイプデザインを手がけてきたコントラプンクト。今展ではアシックス、資生堂、TASAKIなどの日本企業、世界の四大ビールメーカーの一つカールスバーグ、デンマークのレストランnomaなど、10のプロジェクトを紹介した。当初4月開幕予定で準備が完了するも、COVID-19の影響で大幅に会期を見直すこととなった。会場の改良を加えた床のペダルと壁に投影された映像の変化でタイポグラフィを様々な角度から体験する新鮮な展示だが、COVID-19の影響により自宅で過ごす時間に世界中からも鑑賞できる様、WEBによるバーチャル展覧会サイトも用意された。

Kontrapunkt has created numerous original type designs for corporate clients and organizations. This exhibition focused on 10 of their projects, including Japanese corporate clients such as ASICS, Shiseido and Tasaki, as well as the Danish brewer Carlsberg and the globally acclaimed Danish restaurant noma. This exhibition was originally scheduled for April 2020 and preparation were completed. Ultimately, its opening was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. AU-new ways to experience typography were created through the use of interactive pedals on the floor and shifting imagery projected on the gallery walls. For people worldwide who had to stay home during the pandemic, a virtual exhibition site was also prepared for online viewers.

動物園は自然の「自然の窓」。自然を知り、学び、考え、国の文化を現わすさまざまな教育の場としての動物園。動物園は、子どもが取りこぼしのない最高水準の教育を受けられる場であり、ボトムアップからの環境教育も貢献できる資源豊かなビジュアルフィールド。本展では、数多くの動植物園のグラフィックデザインに携わってきた嵯峨美術大学教授の池田泰子の知見を通して、現地体験とリンクする“身近で新鮮な”グラフィックへの扉を開いた。『京都市動物園』をイメージした生物多様性保全を学ぶシンボルツリー、ギャラリー内を持ち歩ける動植物由来の素材が入った万華鏡、同bつの実際のサイズを体感できる飛び出すサイン、動物たちの生息地を学ぶジオラマ、生態系を感じるゲームといった作品が嵯峨美術大学のプロジェクトによって、「Design ZOO」としてdddに現出した。

A zoo is a window on nature. A zoo is a place where we can become familiar with nature, learn about it, think about it; a place that expresses a country's culture and teaches us many things. A zoo is where children can receive an education of impeccably high standard, a resource-rich visual field for building an environmental education from the bottom up. This exhibition opened the door to novel, approachable design linked to real-world experience through the expertise of Yasuko Ikeda, a professor at Kyoto Saga University of Arts who has been involved in the design of numerous zoos and botanical gardens. "Design zoo~ was created at kyoto ddd gallery in the image of Kyoto City Zoo, realized as a project of her university. Among its features were a symbolic tree that taught about biodiversity conservation, a kaleidoscope filled with animal and plant-based materials that visitors could use while walking around the gallery, signs with life-sized animals that seemed to “leap out” at the visitor, miniature dioramas that showed animals' natural habitats, and a game that explained eco-systems.

大森氏司会で進行。前半は本展について、池田氏から、動植物関係のデザイン一筋で来たのは、そこで働く人の想いを引き出し、子供にも伝えたいという思いからという。竹内氏は、展示計画について、来場者がいかにワクワクドキドキできるかの視点で設計。学生は個性を発揮できる様、心掛けた。後半は坂本氏から動物園の歴史を説明。予算上、自分たちでしかデザインできずレベルが低かった。今の嵯峨美大との連携は大いに助かるという。研究者である田中氏からは、文章でしか伝えられない自分たちの研究への思いを早く広く伝達する上で、デザインはとても有効。本展のバナーデザインや保全の樹パネルを是非、動物園でも展開したい。後日、開催の万華鏡づくりワークショップでは、見る世界を変えてくれるモノづくりとその装飾に参加した子供たちは時間も忘れて取り組んだ。

The first half on the discussion was about the exhibition. Ms. Ikeda said she has been totally focused on design relating to zoos and botanical gardens out of a desire to draw out the thoughts of the people who work there, to convey them to children. Mr. Takeuchi, speaking about the display plan, said that although personally he isn7t fond of animals, he designed from the perspective of making it thrilling for visitors, adding that he strove to enable students to manifest their individuality. The second half of the talk began with an explanation by Mr. Sakamoto of the history of Kyoto City Zoo. He said that due to budget constraints they had to design the zoo themselves, the results being poor. He said that working with Kyoto Saga University of Arts was a tremendous help. Mr. Tanaka, whose field is research, expressed the view that design is very effective for quickly and broadly conveying researchers' commitment to their work, which they themselves are able to do only in writing.

Design ZOO ー Life meets design

大手クライアントの仕事やデザインコンペでの受賞を通じたキャリア形成が従来の若手グラフィックデザイナーのメインストリームだったとすれば、三重野龍はそこから距離を置き、オルタナティブな独自のスタンスで活躍。彼の特色は、京都を拠点に同世代の仲間たちとのネットワークを通じて、自分のやりたいことだけをやってきた展。デザイングッズショップ兼ギャラリー”VOU/棒”の運営、パフォーマンス活動など、デザインとアートの花器ねを越えたその活動は、軽やかな手作り感覚と若々しいバイタリティーで満ちている。彼のこれまでの作品をほぼ網羅し展示。

Young graphic designers have typically built up their careers doing work for major clients and garnering awards in design competitions. But Ryu Mieno has taken a different path, based on his unique, alternative work stance. What sets him apart is that Mieno, based in Kyoto, only does work that he wants to do, relying on a network of his contemporaries. His activities go beyond the limits of design and art and include operation of VOU, a gallery cum designer merchandise shop, and involvement in the performing arts. Everything he does is filled with a sense of raw handmade creativity and youthful vitality. This exhibition showcased almost all of Mieno's work to date.

5歳ずつ歳の離れた先輩二人とのトーク。大原氏は、三重野氏の作品が白地に筆勢のある”線描”の印象から最近は“背景”も強くなり、文字が活き活きする環境づくりができていると評価。これには三重野氏が加わる前衛ダンスの身体パフォーマンス活動に基づく運動神経が影響と分析。三重野氏はカリスマ的に多くの後進から支持を受けるが、単に真似していても追いつけないとも。井口氏は、三重野氏が関わる人々が三重野氏の作風を形成しているという。井口氏からの今回の「大全」は、本来死んだ後に開催するものとの指摘に、三重野氏は、これまで8年少しの全作品をほぼすべて展示する事で、自身の活動履歴を見直す事ができたという。今後も興味のある動植物やその環境を参考にしながら、自分の作風がどう変化していくのかに興味があると締め括った。12/7の学生限定ギャラリーツアーでは、大学時代は友達を作り、とにかく一生懸命遊ぶべしとアドバイス。

Mr. Ohara has been an acquaintance since Mr. Mieno showed him a file of his rough designs in Kyoto in 2012. Mr. Iguchi, who resided in Kyoto until recently, in his works adds motion to the writing Mr. Mieno provides him. Mr. Ohara lauded Mr. Mieno saying that whereas earlier his style gave the impression of the "line drawings" brushstroked on a white background, recently hie "background" has become stronger too, creating an environment for his writing to be truly vibrant. He attributed this to Mr. Mieno’s athletic prowess derived from his participation in avant-garde dance performance. Mr. Iguchi offered that people Mr. Mieno works with from his style. When he pointed out that the exhibition title 'in Japanese, "The Complete Works of Ryu Mieno ") is something normally reserved for use posthumously, Mr. Mieno replied that virtually all his works from the past eight years or more were on display, affording him a chance to review his own work history. His closing remark was that he was eager to see how his own style would change in the coming years, making reference to animal, plants and their environment that pique his interest.

精華大の先輩で先生のような原田氏と初対面だが会いたかった高田氏とのトーク。高田氏は、本展で知らない作品を見て目が喜ぶとの評価。高田氏の就職しなかった理由は？に、三重野氏は何も考えておらず、当時はそれが普通だったと。タイポグラフィへの情熱の源は？に、元々フォントが買えず、有っても上手く組めず、目立ちたくもあり、自分で書くように。グラフィティーの匂いは、学生時代のライブペイントの影響。高田氏が今も不安定な三角形をデザインするのは肉体的感覚の筋トレだという。三重野氏が月一回行う詩と写真をデザインする活動も訓練という点でそれに近い。原田氏はAIの機能が欲しいとも。こうすべきと思うとまず逆をやってみて予想外の効果を生む、そんな力を三重野氏に感じるとのこと。

The discussion began with Mr. Takada noting how Mr. Mieno's poster had won the online ADC competition. He said his eyes lit up on seeing works at this exhibition that he was unfamiliar with. Mr. Takada then asked where he derived his passion for typography, to which Mr. Mieno replied that in those days he couldn't afford to buy fonts, and even if he had them he wasn't good at using them; that plus his desire to stand out from the crowd, inspired him to create his own. The graffiti-like aspect of his works was influenced, he said, by his live painting performances he did once a week during his student days. Mr. Takada said that even now designing unstable triangles is muscle training to develop his physical sensitivity. Mr. Mieno's designing of friends' poetry and photos once a month is, by way of training, close to that. Mr. Harada said he is interested in design that can't be designed by AI, to which Mr. Takada added that he wished for AI that could instantly change human-made design in unexpected ways. He said that in Mr. Mieno's works he sensed the ability to take what one thinks should be done, then do the opposite to produce unexpected effect.

デザインをするときは、あまり頭で練らず、手で面白いかたちを探りますが、「GRAPHIC WEST8: 三重野龍　大全　2011-2019 『屁理屈』」では、タイトルが全然浮かばず、仕事をし始めてから理屈を言い始めた自分への自虐のような言葉をタイトルにしました。漢字の「屁理屈」とひらがなの「へりくつ」が屁のような文字で組み合わさっていますが、当時Contact Gonzoとラトビアに行っていて、そこで見た喫煙マークにインスパイアされてデザインしました。 鳥海さんの「もじのうみ」展は当初は鳥海さんの提案で、平野甲賀さんにタイトルのデザインをお願いする予定だったんですが、残念なことにお亡くなりになってしまったため、急遽僕がデザインすることに。文字をテーマにした展覧会なので、別の新しい文字はつくらないことをルールにして、游ゴシックのパースをさわって見え方を変えています。鳥海さんは「僕がおかしくなったと思われないかな」と心配していましたね（笑）。 dddギャラリーの広報物デザインに限らず、デザインするときには「欲しい」と思ってほしい、ということを意識しています。僕が選んだポスターは、実物は見たことはないものの、現物を見たい／持ち帰りたいと思わされるものを基準にしています。

When I design, I usually try to find interesting forms with my hands, rather than churning my brains. For the Graphic West 8: Ryu Mieno Solo Exhibition 2011-2019 “Quibble,” however, I couldn’t come up with anything for the title. I chose quibble because it’s masochistic, and reflective of the way I began using theory when I started working. I created an interlacing design using the kanji (屁理屈) and kana (へりくつ) for the title, and wound it together like a fart; I went to Latvia with Contact Gonzo back then, and the design was inspired by a smoking mark I saw over there. The title design I did for Osamu Torinoumi Making Type: Like Water, Like Air was originally supposed to be done by Koga Hirano as per Mr. Torinoumi’s request, but he unfortunately passed away, and I was asked to fill the sudden gap. The exhibition was all about characters; I had a rule to not create any separate new characters, so I adjusted the perspective of Yu Gothic to give it a new appearance. Mr. Torinoumi was worried that people might think he had gone crazy (laughs). When I design, regardless of whether it’s for PR materials for ddd gallery or not, I want to create desire in viewers. The posters I chose are standard for those that make viewers want to see things they have never seen before, and take them home.

現在フランスで最も精力的に活動するグラフィックデザイン・スタジオの質の高いデザイン手法は数多くの分野で高く評価。ヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレ、ポンピドュー・センター、オーベルヴィリエ国立演芸センター、インテリア・デザイン国際見本市「メゾン・エ・オビジェ・パリ」、ハーバード大学、さらにはピエール・ユイグ、ラファエル・ザルカ、サーダン・アフィフといったフランスを代表する現代アーティストが顧客。日本初の個展となる本展では、ドゥバランスが現代グラフィックデザインの変革の一翼を担ってきたことを示す代表的な作品の数々を展示。

deValence is one of France's most prolific contemporary graphic design studios. The superlative quality of its design methods has garnered high acclaim in numerous fields. Its institutional clients include La Biennale di Venezia, Centre Pompidou, La Commune (Centre Dramatique National, Aubervilliers), Maison&Objet international trade fair of interior design, and Harvard University. deValence's private client list further includes some of France's leading contemporary artists, among them Pierre Huyghe, Raphaël Zarka and Saâdane Afif. This first exhibition in Japan showcased many of deValence's representative works demonstrating how the studio has contributed to innovation in contemporary graphic design.

2001年に設立した二人が、6つのプロジェクトを例に、彼らが考えるデザインにおける「システム」についてプレゼンテーションを行った。ポンピドゥー・センターの展覧会カタログ「DADA」は、彼らが開発したDADAグロテスクフォントとグリッドシステムで制作された。チューリヒの演劇ギャラリーのVIでは、予算がなくロゴを判子にした招待状作成を提案、手作り感が受取人を喜ばせた。彼らのB42という出版社は、グラフィックデザイナーにツールとして役立つ本を発行する図書館のような存在を担う。日本の寄藤文平氏他、海外デザイナーの仕事もフランスへ紹介。彼らを日本へ紹介した室賀氏からのスタジオ名の由来への質問には、中央集権的なフランスで、彼らが学んだ地方都市名をアピールしたとの事。グローバルなネットや人の流動性の進展によるデザインの均一化を嫌う彼らは、コンテクストを重視し、余計なモノを省いたデザインを心がけている。

The two founding members of deValence, which was launched in 2001, gave a presentation on the "systems" they see existing in design, using six of their projects on exhibit to illustrate their discussion. In their VI for a theater gallery in Zurich, due to budget constrains they proposed preparing invitation cards using a stamped logo, and the recipients were pleased by this hand-crafted appearance. B42, deValence's publishing house, serves like a library that publishes books useful as tools for graphic designers and typographers. It has also introduced France to the works of Japan's Bunpei Yorifuji and other foreign designers. In response to a question posed by Kiyonori Muroga, who introduced deValence in Japan, about the origin of their studio name, they said they wanted to promote the name of the regional city where they had studied going against the French trend toward centralization. deValence loathes the homogenization of design resulting from globalization and free movement of people; they value context and strive for design stripped of anything superfluous.

アンスティチュ・フランセ関西＝京都 稲畑ホールで開催。まずドヴァランスがミュージアムに纏わる5つの仕事を紹介。保坂氏からは、彼らの図録は注釈の入れ方が絶妙とのコメント。菊地氏は、20世紀のタイポグラフィは静的だったが、彼らのものは止まっていても動き出しそうにダイナミックだと評価。次に菊地氏が青森県立美術館のVIを始めとする、自身の作品を紹介。ヒエラルキーを嫌う人柄が滲み出る内容。美術大学中退の自分は、発注される仕事もやれば、自分で店を経営したり、自ら展覧会をしたり、という今の働き方が合っているという。「1つの職業＝1人の人間」から解放されるべきとも。保坂氏は、出版社B42はF7でNPO活動もしているドヴァランスに菊地氏との共通性を見る。最後にデザイナーの責任について、最低限の技術的基盤に基づき社会的責任を果たす事と締め括られた。

This special event took place in Kyoto at Institut français du Japon - Kansai's Inabata Hall. It began with an introduction to five works exhibited deValence at ddd relating to museums. Mr. Kikuchi offered that whereas 20th century typography was static, deValence 's typography is dynamic in seeming on the verge of moving even when standing still. Next, Mr. Kikuchi introduced his exhibition of his graphic works and his VI for a museum. The content vividly reflected his anathema to hierarchy. Mr. Kikuchi says that his current way of working fits him: he performs graphic design on consignment, operates his own shop, also holds his own exhibitions. He added that we should be liberated from the constraining notion that every person has only one profession. Mr. Hosaka sees a point in common between Mr. Kikuchi and deValence, who operate B42 and undertake activities through their NPO F7. The Talk Event concluded with remarks relating to the responsibility of the designer: namely, that being a designer incurs a special responsibility based on a minimum technical basis.

deValence－Systems as Playgrounds

「平成」から「令和」に元号が変わったタイミングに激動の平成の30年を振り返る企画。DNP文化振興財団が所蔵するポスターの中から平成に入って制作された作品を展示。5～6年毎の5つのセクション機構としている。始めのセクションではバブルの名残が感じられるが、バブル崩壊やリーマンショック等も経て、大量生産・大量消費も影を潜め、モノからコトへと人々のニーズも変化した。携帯電話の登場、印刷のDTP化、環境問題の深刻化、ネット社会の到来といった大きなトピックスが駆け巡った時代を、グラフィックデザインがどのようにその変化に寄り添い、また視覚コミュニケーションの力がどのように時代に営業を与えたのかを検証した。ヘイセイを追体験する試みが、次の時代への道筋を照らす小さな光となることを願い開催。

Coming immediately after the start of the new Reiwa era introduced on May 1, this exhibition was a retrospective review of the three decades of the just completed Heisei era, a period of dynamic transformations in Japanese society. On display were posters created during the Heisei years (1989-2019) gleaned from the archives of the DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion. The exhibition was divided into five sections, each covering a span of five to six years. The first section evoked a lingering sense of the high-flying years of Japan's "bubble economy"; but subsequently, after the bubble burst and the nation weathered the recession of 2008, the heady days of mass production and mass consumption ended, and demand shifted from material goods to sources of personal fulfillment. Major changes occurred: the advent of the mobile phone, the development of desktop printing, increasingly serious environmental concerns, the arrival of the Internet-driven society. Against this backdrop the exhibition examined how graphic design changed during the Heisei years, and what impact visual communication had on the era. By reviewing the events of Heisei, it was hoped the exhibition would shed a ray of light on the pathway into the new Reiwa era.

初回はCCGAの森崎が担当。純粋芸術とも言われるファインアートに対し、グラフィックデザインは応用芸術とも言われ、日常生活に有用性がある事、経済・商業等と密接に繋がり、何らかの情報伝達を担う点を解説。またポスターについては、「赤」立ち止まらせ、「黄」注意を惹き、「青」歩き出させる信号機の様なモノ、という松永伸氏の言葉を紹介。元号が変わるタイミングに激動の平成の30年を振り返る為に企画し、5つのセクション構成としている。始めのセクションではバブルの名残が感じられるが、バブル崩壊やリーマンショック等も経て、大量生産、大量消費も影を潜め、モノからコトへと人々のニーズも変化した。携帯電話の登場、印刷のDTP化、環境問題の深刻化、ネット社会の到来といった大きなトピックスが駆け巡った時代を、作品をピックアップして振り返った。残り2階は、dddの熊本が自身の実体験なども織り交ぜて作品解説を試みた。

The first Gallery Tour was led by CCGA Curator Takako Morizaki. she discussed how, in contrast with fine art which is said to be "pure" art, i.e. art that has usefulness in everyday life, is closely related to economic and commercial matters, and functions as means of conveying information. Concerning posters, she introduced how Shin Matsunaga likened them to a traffic signal: red being a warning to stop, yellow inviting caution, and green permitting one to proceed. This exhibition was planned as a retrospective of the 30 years of the tumultuous Heisei era, timed to coincide with the start of the new Reiwa period. It was divided into sections each spanning 506 years. The first section retained a lingering sense of the heady days of the bubble economy; but in the wake of the bubble's collapse and the financial crisis of 2008, mass production and mass consumption retreated and people's needs changed from material goods to personally fulfilling experiences. Major changes occurred in succession: the advent of the mobile phone, the development of desktop publishing, increasingly serious environmental concerns, and the arrival of the Internet-driven society.

日本にはグラフィックデザインを中心に展示するギャラリーがいくつか存在しています。しかし、世界的に見ると、そのような施設はほとんどなく、グラフィックデザイナーの個展やグラフィックデザインをテーマにした企画展が常時行われているこの環境は、かなり特殊なことだといえます。 そのなかの一つであるdddギャラリーは、同じ組織が運営する東京のgggと比べて、オルタナティブな姿勢で活動をしてきたという点でさらに希少な存在だと言えます。著名なデザイナーの個展を軸に据えたgggとは対照的に、dddギャラリーは「日本人がまだ知らない海外デザイナー」の紹介を初期の方針に持ち、その後も東京以西のデザイナーの紹介や他領域のデザイナーの展覧会を行うなど、ここでしか見られない展覧会活動を続けています。 gggからの巡回展が享受できるだけでなく、dddギャラリーでしか見られない展覧会があること。それはデザイナーやデザイン学生にとって恵まれた環境だと思います。このキーワードでは、dddでしか見ることができなかった展覧会をセレクトしています。

There are a few galleries in Japan whose exhibitions pivot around graphic design. If we look overseas however, institutions like these are even rarer; a place where solo graphic design exhibitions and other special exhibitions with graphic design themes happen regularly is quite a special thing. ddd gallery is one of those places; it’s even rarer when you consider that they’ve always maintained an alternative stance compared with ggg in Tokyo (which is also run by DNP Foundation). In stark contrast to ggg, which has a history centered around solo exhibitions of celebrated designers, they have always tried to hold exhibitions with “international designers yet unknown to Japanese,” designers West of Tokyo, and designers from other fields—even now they still continue to hold exhibitions that can’t be seen elsewhere. Where possible, they have avoided being the next leg on touring exhibitions from ggg, choosing to hold their own exhibitions viewable only at ddd Gallery instead. ヘイセイ・グラフィックス

HEISEI GRAPHICS

矢萩が手掛けた500冊超の本を時系列に手にとれる様に展示。装丁のラフ案も展示しデザインの工程を解説。インドの出版社タラブックスとの仕事、「ちいさくつくり、ちいさく届ける」為、自ら立ち上げたリトルプレスAmbooks、「人間はなぜ本をつくるのか」のテーマで、小学生の子どもたちと取り組んだ本づくりワークショップ、国内外の紙づくりの現場を訪ねる旅など、彼のこれまでの大小のプロジェクトについても紹介。
2019年9月、学びの杜ののいちカレードへ巡回。

This exhibition offered visitors a chance to browse through the more than 500 titles Tamon Yahagi has designed to date. In addition to the works themselves, which were arranged in chronological order, also on display were his rough sketches and detailed explanations of his design process. Yahagi also introduced an array of projects, of various scales, he has been involved in through the years. These include: his collaborations with the Indian publisher Tara Books; his launch of Ambooks; his workshops on book making offered to elementary school students; and his travels to places where paper is made.
In September 2019, this exhibition traveled to the Nonoichi Calade.

互いに兄弟の様に似ていると認める二人。寄藤氏のラジオ番組で話して依頼の付き合い。本展の開幕時は未完成で後からコンテンツを追加。数年前、寄藤氏のgggの展覧会も同様。矢萩氏の“成長”を感じた。寄藤氏は、かつては「16時間の壁」を超えるべく17時間以上連続で働いた。渋谷スクランブル交差点でスナイパーの狙撃をのたうつダンスで回避するデザインゴルゴの寓話は秀逸。一方、矢萩氏の理想は、インド生活の影響もあり、なまけつつ時々本を作る「ネズミ男」。「アート」ではなく「フォーク（民芸）」により惹かれる。子供の頃、本を冷たい、怖いと感じていた彼が、偶然の装丁家のエピソードを通じ、本は本としてそれを取り巻く周辺も楽しんで欲しいとの結論。ギャラリーツアーでは多くの本を例に、背表紙の長さや様々な製本技法に至るまでのこだわりを詳しく紹介。

This Gallery Talk brought together two designers who acknowledge their physical resemblance, like two brothers. Mr. Yorifuji said that seeing the 600 books displayed in chronological order, he got a sense that Mr. Yahagi had "grown." Mr. Yorifuji used to work nonstop more that 17 hours a day. His tae about "Design Golgo" evading a sniper attack by writhing through a dance on the Shibuya scramble intersection is brilliant. Mr. Yahagi's ideal, partly influenced by his having lived in India, is "Mouse Man," who is basically lazy but occasionally makes books. More than art, he is attracted to folk art. When Mr. Yahagi was a child, he thought books were cold and scary, but through his stories as a book designer by chance, he concluded the Gallery Talk by saying he hoped people would enjoy books as books and for what they encompass. In Gallery Tour, using the many books on display as examples, Mr. Yahagi spoke in detail about how particular he is in such matter s as the length on the spine or various binding methods.
