「Magnetic Vision（引き寄せられた視野）」は、1988年「Shot by Sight」から続く視覚世界への探求の新たな展開。虫眼鏡の原理の逆、レンズの内側の世界がその周囲の景色まで含んだより広い世界を凝縮した状態、つまり周囲の世界を磁力によって引き寄せたような映像とすることで、作品のフレームに切り取られた映像が周囲と連綿と続いているという意識を掬い上げ、意識して見ている世界に肉薄しようという試み。

The exhibition featured ”Magnetic Vision," the latest in Yahagi's ongoing explorations into the realm of visual perception, a quest that began with  "Shot by Sight" in 1988. In defiance of the rule of a magnifying glass, in his works the world within the lens frame is compressed in a way that incorporates the surrounding scenery, creating a broader image in which the outer perimeter is magnetically pulled into the central focus. By arousing this perception of the framed image continuing seamlessly with its surroundings, Yahagi endeavors to approach closely the world as we consciously view it.

山形県生まれ。早稲田大学大学院理工学部研究科修了。慶應義塾大学理工学部非常勤講師。建築、ランドスケープ、グラフィック、プロダクト、家具、写真、アート、彫刻、評論を手がける。ワルシャワ国際ポスタービエンナーレ特別賞（1980）／金賞（1990）、原弘賞（1988）、桑沢賞（1995）、講談社出版文化賞ブックデザイン賞（1995）、勝見勝賞（1999）等。『VISION OFJAPAN』（1991）ほか著書、作品集多数。また建築作品「市川の家」（2003）で2004年千葉県建築文化奨励賞、「コンカード横浜」（2008）で神奈川県建築コンクール奨励賞を受賞。

Born in Yamagata Prefecture. Graduated from Waseda University with a degree in Creative Science and Engineering (Architecture). Currently an instructor in the Faculty of Science and Technology of Keio University. actively engaged in architecture, landscape design graphic design, product design, furniture design, photography, fine art, sculpture and criticism. Among his architectural works, "House of Ichikawa" (2003) won the 2003 "Selected Architecture Design" award from Chiba Prefecture, and "Concurred Yokohama" (2008) an award of merit in the Kanagawa Architecture Competition.

日本人のコミュニケーションの感覚は、白黒はっきりさせない曖昧なものだと考えます。グラフィックデザインにおいても、西洋のようなシステマティックなデザインではなく、有機的なフォルムをまとった日本らしい表現を好んでいます。 「真 and/or 善」展のポスターは、杉崎真之助氏とふたりでデザインし、それぞれの名前を表す「真」と「善」の文字を自身のスタイルでデザインしたものです。私がデザインした「善」の字は曲線を用いた有機的なフォルムを持ち、境界線をぼやかした曖昧なものになっています。これは「情感と湿度の造形」という考えに基づいたもの。グローバル化が進む時代だからこそ、私はグラフィックデザイナーとしてあえて日本人特有のコミュニケーションの魅力を追求していきたいと考えています。

I believe that intuition in communication between Japanese people has an ambiguity that does not define things as black and white. In regards to graphic design, Japanese prefer unique forms of expression with organic shapes, unlike the systematic design we see in the west. Both Shinnoske Sugisaki and myself designed the poster for the Truth And/Or Virtue Graphic Designs by Shinnoske Sugisaki and Yoshimaru Takahashi Exhibition together, each creating a styled character for the parts of our names, 真 (shin), and 善 (zen). I created an organic form for 善 with curves, to give it indistinct boundary lines. This is based on the idea of form with emotion and warmth. The world is globalizing, but I believe it’s important to adopt a stance to seek out a more appropriately Japanese form of communication through graphic design.
