音とアートとグラフィックの新しい可能性を俯瞰的に捉えようという試み。視覚表現、聴覚表現といったジャンルにこだわることなく、音・文字・グラフィックの世界で表現活動をしているメンバーが参加。各分野の気鋭のクリエイターたちが、それぞれの多角的かつ柔軟な視点で「音（phono）の記録（graph）」というテーマに対峙した実験的な取り組みを紹介。

This exhibition was an experiment seeking to achieve a bird's-eye view of new possibilities in sound, art and graphics. The participating members are all active in the realms of sound, letters and graphics, favoring no one genre, visual or aural, in particular. The creative artists, all vibrant and up-and-coming forces with in their fields, experimented with the theme of "phono/graph" from their respective multilateral and flexible vantage points.

名古屋生まれ。大阪芸術大学音楽学科卒。1980年代半ばより日常のなかの「音」に着目した装置、サウンド・オブジェを制作。インスタレーションやパフォーマンス、ワークショップを通じて、空間における「音」の体験から新たな認識へと開かれていくような活動を展開している。2001、07年、ヴェニス・ビエンナーレ参加。

Yukio Fujimoto creates "sound artworks" focused on sounds heard in everyday life. His activities take the experience of hearing sounds in space and expand that experience to achieve new awareness.

大阪生まれ。神戸芸術工科大学、杉浦康平の下、卒業制作として「文字と音」を作成。Schule fur Gestaltung Baselの基礎コースを満喫し、2009年より大阪のhelmut schmid designでタイポグラフィに重点を置き、紙媒体を中心にデザインをする。

A creative design team formed in 1999 in Kyoto, dealing with audio and video multimedia. Currently, they are active in installation, live performance, sound, design, and other fields, transcending limitations of genre while exploring boundaries and connections in media expression. Born in Ehime Prefecture. Ryota Yagi reinterprets the function and attributes of objects, reconfigures them and turn around their relativity and valued, thereby recycling experiences and memories in new contexts.


「Graphic West 5: type trip to Osaka | typographics ti:#270」（2013）のデザインを担当したのは、完全に行きがかり上のことでした。この展覧会は日本タイポグラフィ協会の広報誌『typographics ti:（以下『ti:』）をベースにしたもので、「type trip」をテーマに２年にわたってアジアのグラフィックデザイナーを取材した成果を、空間に立ち上がらせようと試みたものでした。『ti:』のメンバーはほぼ全員グラフィックデザイナーで、編集長兼キュレーターとして誰に頼むかを悩んでいる内に時間がなくなり、結局自分でやることになりました。 『ti:』の表紙は東洋占術の「八卦」をモチーフにアジア各都市のデザイナーにデザインしてもらったので、ポスターにはそれらの八卦の図像をすべて配置し、各号で使われていた色をそのままグラデーションにしました。「dddデータベース」展の広報物のデザインも私によるものですが、こちらもこれまでのすべての展覧会ポスターを、同じサイズでポスター〜チラシ〜ポストカードに配置したものです。約10年経ってもアプローチが同じというのが少し恥ずかしいですね。 Graphic Westシリーズでは計３回展覧会を企画させてもらいました。やはり個人的には思い入れがある展覧会シリーズです。「dddデータベース」展のお話をいただいたときも、このシリーズに関わった関西のデザイナーの人たちには、ポスターのセレクションとコメントで参加してほしいと思いました。西日本だけでなく、海外を含む東京以西に広く開かれたdddギャラリーならではの企画展として、今後の展開にも強く期待します。

I came about doing the design for Graphic West 5: type trip to Osaka | typographics ti:#270 by pure circumstance. The Japan Typography Association’s journal, typographics ti: (abbreviated, ti:) served as the basis for the exhibition: it was an attempt to take the result of two years of interviews with Asian graphic designers under a theme, ‘type trip’, and organize it into an exhibition space. Almost all members of ti: were graphic designers; I was both editor-in-chief and curator, but I ran out of time in my considerations of who to ask, so I ended up doing it myself. The cover for ti: used a motif of the eight trigrams (known in Japanese as 八卦, or hakke), which are used in the East for fortune telling. We asked a different designer from each city in Asia to design the cover using a trigram; I made an arrangement of all the eight trigrams in the poster, and combined all the individual colors used into a gradient for the background. I also did the design for the PR materials for the ddd Database exhibition; in the same way, I took all the previous exhibition posters and arranged them all at the same size into a single poster, pamphlet, and postcard. It's a little embarrassing that even after 10 years, my approach was still the same. I have been involved in three exhibitions in the Graphic West series. I now have an emotional attachment to it. When I was asked to help with the ddd Database Exhibition, I wanted the designers from Kansai that had been involved in this series to participate by choosing posters and giving commentary. I really hope to see more open and experimental exhibitions at ddd gallery, not just from West Japan, but looking out West from Tokyo, and beyond.

スタッフ間の心構えを共通化し、自立性を高める様な内容のgraf内企画展示を行っていました。互いの思考プロセスを丁寧に見せるようなリサーチライティングな展覧会として。自主活動を行なっていた最中に、依頼を頂き展覧会としてやらせて頂いたのが、この「感じる箱」展が初めてだったかもしれない。 grafのプロダクトに「SPHELAR LANTERN」という太陽電池を使ったソーラーランタンがあります。「光ってなんやろ？」という根本的な議論から入ったこのプロダクトの開発のプロセスには膨大なデータが蓄積されていったんですが、ちょうどこのころにdddギャラリーでの展示のお話しをもらいました。「感じる箱」展のチームはこのときのメンバーが中心になっています。 grafでは、グラフィックをグラフィック、空間を空間と分けて捉えるわけじゃない。空間も平面の積層だと考えています。文字情報をうまく設計するというような話ではなく、アフォードをデザインするという考え方です。この展覧会がリサーチから始まるgrafや僕のロジックモデルをつくるきっかけになっているかもしれません。「見る」というより「聞く」展覧会。ポスターもそういった観点で選びました。

We used to plan and hold exhibitions within graf that would standardize mindset and cultivate independence between staff. This research exhibition carefully explored every member’s thought processes. It might have been the first time we were asked to do an exhibition with the Sensory Boxes since we started working independently. One of graf’s products is the Sphelar Lantern, a lantern powered by solar cells. We collected a huge amount of data in the process surrounding the development of this product, which started with the fundamental question, “what is light?”; and it was right around this time we were asked to do the exhibition. The team for the Sensory Boxes exhibition was made up of the same members. At graf, we don’t separate graphic and space design work into different teams. We see space as layered planes. I’m not talking about designing textual information to look good; I’m talking about designing to afford. It just may be that this exhibition was the start of the logic model I myself and we here at graf use; one that starts with research. This is an exhibition where you ‘listen’, more so than ‘look’. We chose to adopt that point of view for the poster, too.
