Before the return of Hong Kong in the summer of 1997, a design exhibition was held in Shenzhen, China, the city next to Hong Kong. It was a competition and an exhibition called Graphic Design in China '96. Countries using Chinese characters and the Chinese written language, China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan participated with over 1800 entries. There were posters, CI, packages, small graphics, newspaper and magazine ads, books and editorials. Posters were the greatest in number and the power of China was felt throughout. The Graphic Design in China Exhibition consisted of two parts: awardwinning and outstanding works as well as introducing the works of 4 Hong Kong graphic designers (Alan Chan, Freeman Lau, Kan Tai-Keung, Wang Xu). The heated atmosphere suggested the tone of Asia in the 21st century. About 20 designers from China and Hong Kong came to Japan for opening.
