文字の本質を見据えながら、今日的な文字表現を積極的に探究してきた季刊誌『たて組ヨコ組』が(株)モリサワから発刊されて10年。10周年を記念し、40号までの表紙デザインと連載に登場した作家たちによる新作ポスターを展示。「文字からのイマジネーション」をテーマにした41枚のオリジナルポスターの競演は、世界で最も豊かなタイポグラフィ環境にふさわしく、そのスケールといい顔ぶれといい、まさに百花繚乱の趣があった。

It has been 10 years since Morisawa Co., Ltd. launched the true nature of letters while positively exploring modern forms of expressions for letters. To commemorate the 10th year, the cover designs through the 40th issue and new posters by artists who appeared the series were exhibited. As fot the array of 41 original posters with the theme, "Imagination from Letters," it was unbelievably rich it terms of the scale and the artists involved.

Born in Tokyo. after graduating from Kuwasawa Design School in 1962, he worked at advertising design agencies before establishing the Masuteru Aoba Design Office in 1969. His numerous awards include the Asahi Advertising Award, the Brno International Graphic Design Biennale Grand Prix, the Warsaw International Poster Biennale Gold prize, and the New York Art Directors Club International Exhibition Gold Prize. In 1993 he produced the first official poster for the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. He won the JAAC Yamana Prize in 1995, and in 2006 was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon. He is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale, a committee member of the Tokyo Art Directors Club and a director of Japan Graphic Designers Association.

Born in Kanagawa Prefecture, he graduated from the Industrial Art Design Department of Kanagawa Kogyo High School as well as from the Kuwasawa Design Institute. He joined Light Publicity in 1964 ad established the Katsumi Asaba Design Room in 1975. He went to Yunnan, China, in 1990 to fine the illusive Nakhi pictographic script and had a one-man show of new works at the ggg. Recent works in advertising include "Nature is the Model" for the Saison Group, "A Delicious Life" for Seibu Department Store, "Highway of Dreams" for Suntory Old, "A Regular Guy when Drinking" for Suntory White and "Schwarzenegger Eats " for Nissin Foods among others. His many awards include JAAC Honorable Mention in 1985, the ADC Members Award in 1974, 1979 and 1989, the Mainichi Design Award in 1980, the Japan Advertising Prize, Yamana Award in 1989 and the ADC Members Hiromu Hara Award in 1990. He is a member of Tokyo ADC and JAGDA and Chairman of Tokyo TDC.

Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1940. After graduating from Kuwasawa Design School and working at Keinosuke Sato Typography Studio and Light Publicity, he founded Katsumi Asaba Design Studio in 1975. Many of his creations as an art director have made a lasting mark in the history of Japanese advertising design. Representative works include landmark ads for Seibu Department Stores, Suntory and Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, and package design for Kirin tea. Asaba is an expert on Dongba, an ancient pictorial script still used in some areas of China. He has received numerous awards, including the Japan Advertising Artists Club Special Prize, Tokyo Type Directors Club Award, Mainichi Design Prize, Japan Advertising Awards Yamana Prize, Japan Academy Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction, Tokyo Art Directors Club Grand Prix, and two decorations from the Japanese Government: a Medal with Purple Ribbon; and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette. Asaba is chairman of the Tokyo Type Directors Club, a committee member of the Tokyo Art Directors Club, president of JAGDA (Japan Graphic Designers Association), Japan representative in the Alliance Graphique Internationale, director of Kuwasawa Design School, and visiting professor at Tokyo Zokei University and Kyoto Seika University. He has a 6th level ranking in table tennis.

Born in Miyazaki Prefecture. In 1978 he established Beans. He has performed art direction and creative advertising for numerous publications, music, television, etc., for Parco, Suntory, Comme de Garçons, and The Asahi Simbun. Among the many prizes he has won to date are the Tokyo ADC Grand Prize, Tokyo TDC Members Award and the Mainichi Advertising Award. He is a member of Tokyo ADC, Tokyo TDC and JAGDA.

He established his own company, Beans Co., Ltd., in 1978. Through the years he has forged a prominent career as a graphic designer and art director, the latter area encompassing the realms of advertising, music, publishing, and TV. Today, with innovative creations integrating photography and typography, his design work continues to span across multiple genres. Inoue's major awards received to date include the Tokyo ADC Grand Prize, Tokyo TDC Grand Prize, JAAC Yamana Prize and Mainichi Design Award. Born in Sapporo, Hokkaido Prefecture, Kasai Kaoru joined SUN-AD Company Limited in 1973 after stints working at Bunka Printing Co., Ltd. and Ohtani Design. He currently serves as advisor at SUN-AD Company Limited. His creative activities span a wide range, including advertising and art direction for Suntory Oolong Tea, United Arrows, Toraya Confectionery, and TORAYA CAFÉ, as well as corporate identity and signage, graphics and title design for films and theaters, and book design. Major awards received include the Tokyo ADC Grand Prix, Hiromu Hara Memorial Prize, Mainichi Design Award, and the Yusaku Kamekura Design Award. Born in Kyoto, he got his M.A. in design from UCLA in 1977 and was a teaching assistant in video and computer graphics. In Japan, he worked in the Takenobu Igarasghi Design Studio before established Polygon Pictures in 1983. Main works include a 6-disc video disc series, and in computer graphics, "Dancing Sony," and "In Search of performing Axis" among others. He won the 1991 Tokyo Typo-Directors Club Members' Gold Award and published "a Collection of Works by Toshifumi Kawahara: Dancing Alphabet" (Rikuyosha).

Born in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture. He graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (now, Tokyo University of the Arts) with a degree in Visual Design. After initially working in the advertising department of Shiseido, he went freelance in 1971. He won a Tokyo ADC Award in 1985, a Mainichi Design Award in 1991, and the Education Minister’s Art Encouragement Prize for young artists in 1997. He has also won numerous awards at international poster competitions, including at the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). His works are part of permanent collections at many art museums both in Japan and abroad. Mr. Sato is presently a member of JAGDA, AGI, Japan Design Committee, Tokyo ADC and Tokyo TDC. He is best known for his unique style of expression acclaimed for its Oriental touch, but in recent years he has been working with other modes of free expression. He is a professor at Tama Art University.

Born in Osaka, Mr Nagai attended Tokyo National University of Fine Arts an Music until withdrawing in 1951. In 1960 he participated in the founding of Nippon Design Center, where he currently serves as Senior Executive Advisor. He has created numerous symbols through the years, including for the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics, Expo'75 in Okinawa and Asahi Breweries. He has also designed a broad range of posters for corporate advertising, musical performances, exhibitions, etc., and overseas. Mr. Nagai is a member of Tokyo ADC and AGI.

Born in Osaka, Kazumasa Nagai attended Tokyo National University of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts), where he studied Sculpture until withdrawing in 1951. In 1960, he participated in the founding of the Nippon Design Center, together with Ikko Tanaka and other up-and-coming young designers. In 1975 Mr. Nagai became that organization’s president, and he currently serves as its chief executive advisor. He also serves as special advisor to JAGDA.
During his long career he has created logomarks, CI and posters for numerous clients including: the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics, Okinawa Expo ’75, Ibaraki and Niigata prefectures, Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA), Asahi Breweries, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, etc. In the late 1980s Mr. Nagai launched his “LIFE” series featuring flora and fauna motifs, and in 2003 his creative endeavors expanded to copperplate printmaking.
He has won a host of awards, both global and domestic: Tokyo ADC Grand Prize, Yusaku Kamekura Design Award, Mainichi Design Award, Mainichi Art Award, Himeji Cultural Arts Grand Prize, Warsaw International Poster Biennale Gold Prize, and International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno Grand Prize. From the Japanese Government he has received the prestigious Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts, Medal with Purple Ribbon, and Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.
Mr. Nagai’s works are included in the permanent collections of more than 20 museums worldwide, including the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design, Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA), and Metropolitan Museum of Art.

 Born in Tokyo. In 1956, after graduating from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music (now called Tokyo University of the Arts), where he majored in Design, he joined the advertising department at Shiseido. Later he moved to Deska until 1961, when he established Nakajo Design Office. Nakajo's major work in a career now spanning more than four decades includes: art direction and design for Hanatsubaki, Shiseido's cultural magazine, and for The Ginza / Tactics Design; logo and packaging design for Shiseido Parlour; logo and signage planning for the Tokyo Ginza Shiseido Building; corporate identity (CI) planning for Matsuya Ginza, Wacoal Spiral, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and Hosomi Museum; illustrations for "Nihongo de Asobo" (Let's Play in Japanese), a children's program on NHK; and cover illustrations for Kurashi no Techo magazine. Among his numerous awards received to date are the Tokyo Art Directors Club Members Award Grand Prize, the Tokyo Type Directors Club Members'  Gold Prize, the Yusaku Kamekura Design Award, the Mainichi Design Award, the Japan Advertising Awards' Yamana Prize, and – from the Japanese Government – a Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon and The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette. Nakajo is a member of the Tokyo Art Directors Club, Japan Graphic Designers Association and Tokyo Illustrators Society, and he currently serves as Senior Vice President of the Tokyo Type Directors Club. Born in Iwate Prefecture, he graduated from Tokyo Art School in 1948. He joined the Shiseido advertising department in 1948 and after becoming General Manager of Advertising with a ranking equal to a director while also General Manager of Production, he is now a full-time advisor. He got the Japan Advertising Artists Club Special Mention and Members Award, the Tokyo ADC Award, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Members Awards. The Asahi Advertising Award, the Mainichi Advertising Award, the Warsaw International Biennial Gold and and Special Mention Awards, the Kinugasa Award, the Yamana Award, and the Advertising Dentsu Award. He was invited to exhibit at the "Mona Lisa Smile Exhibition" at the Louvre Decorative Art Museum, Paris, the Warsaw International Biennial, the "12 Japanese Artists Poster Exhibition" (Paris), the "10 Artists World Poster Exhibition" (Tokyo), and the "Graphic Design of Today" (Tokyo Museum of Modern Art).

Born in Osaka. In 1936, graduated from Osaka City Kogei High School (Design Course). After stints working in the advertising department of Mitsukoshi and Kintetsu department stores, went freelance in 1952. His main awards include the Osaka Arts Prize in 1954; the 1st Mainichi Industrial Design Award (today's Mainichi Design Award) om 1955; also became a member of AGI: participated in "Graphic'55" exhibition. In 1960, he served as a panelist at the World Industrial Design Conference and in 1970, participated in the basic color planning for the World Expo in Osaka. In 1981, he received the 12th Kodansha Culture Award in Publishing, in 1982, was awarded a Medal with a Purple Ribbon by the Japanese Government and in 1984, received the 5th Yamana Prize. In 1988, was awarded the Fourth Order of the Rising Sun Medal by the Japanese Government. In 1996, was inducted into the Tokyo ADC Hall of Fame. His works are in the permanent collections in many museums around the world. His main publications include "The World of Yoshio Hayakawa," the collection of essays, "Feeling to Pass the Time," and a collection of dialogues, "In Between Emptiness and Substance."

メディアアートのパイオニアであり, 80年代にCG作品,その後のコンピュータによる彫刻作品を経て, 90年代には「Beyond Pages（1995–1997）」をはじめとするインタラクティブ作品によって知られている。特に1992年の「生け捕られた速度」から始まり, 2012年の「Voices of Aliveness」へと続く「Field-works」シリーズは, 動画にGPSによる位置情報を付加することで, デジタルによる記録と記憶の新しい可能性,仮想空間と現実空間の連続を可能にした作品群である。最新作『Anarchive n˚6』は, AR技術を用いて実現された藤幡正樹の全作品集として出版されている。

Hosoya Gan was born in Kanagawa prefecture and graduated from the Department of Technical Design at Kanagawa Technical Senior High School in 1953. He joined Light Publicity Co., Ltd. in the same year.
Hosoya is currently chairman of the Board of Directors at Light Publicity. He also serves as chairman of the Tokyo Art Directors Club (ADC) and he is a member of the Japan Graphic Design Association Inc. Hosoya's awards include the Japan Advertising Artists Club (JAAC) Special Selection (1955, 1956), the Tokyo ADC Gold and Silver Prizes (1959), the Mainichi Industrial Design Award (jointly awarded, 1966), the JAAC Member Award (collaboration, 1967),  the Tokyo ADF Members Grand Prize (1971, 1978, 1984, and 1988), the Asahi Advertising Award Grand Prize (1988), the Japan Advertising Award Yamana Prize (1990), the Medal with Purple Ribbon (2001), and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette (2014).

Born in Hiroshima, he left Osaka University of Arts. In 1970, he traveled through the Silk Road from Russia and Europe. After the advertising department of Takashimaya, he established the Keizo Matsui Design Office in 1984 and Hundred Design Inc. in 1992. His many awards include the Japan-America Graphic Design Exhibition Silver Award and the Tokyo ADC Award. Recently, he is primarily involved graphic design but also many genre such as packaging, the environment, film, and architecture. He has has exhibition abroad such as "China Graphic Design '96" (China) and "Matsui-Graphkdesign aus Japan" (Germany). His books include "3D Graphics" (Rikuyosha) and "Keizo Matsui: The Graphic Designer" '(Chugoku Seinen Publishing Co.). He is a member of AGI, NY.ADC, Tokyo ADC, Tokyo TDC and is a director of JAGDA.

Born in Tokyo, he graduated in design course of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1964, and joined in the advertising division of Shiseido. In 1971 he founded Shin Matsunaga Design. His work centers on posters, CI designs and other graphic design, but his creative activities also cover a wide range including drawings and monuments. His works are in the permanent collections of 46 museums around the world. He received numerous awards, including the Mainichi Design Award and International Poster Biennale, Warsaw Gold Medal.

Born in Tokyo in 1940. After completing the design course at Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music (now, Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1964, he initially worked in the advertising division of Shiseido Co., Ltd. In 1971 he founded Shin Matsunaga Design Inc. Mr. Matsunaga’s creative activities center on graphic design, including posters, corporate identity (CI) planning and packaging, but also run a broad gamut from drawings and sculpture to monuments. His major works to date include: summer campaigns for Shiseido; a series of peace posters; total graphics for Sezon Museum of Art; CI planning for Benesse Corporation, Issey Miyake and The National Museum of Western Art; and package design for Scottie tissues, Can Chu-Hi beverage, Shiseido “uno” men’s cosmetics, and the French cigarette brand Gitanes (finishing 1st in an international competition).

Recent activities include exhibitions at the Nantenshi Gallery in 1982, 1984 and 1991, the 1985 Paris Biennial, the San Paulo Biennial, "Tokyo Form and Spirit" in 1986 (Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art and a U.S. tour), "Japanese Avant-Garde Art 1910-1970" (Paris, Pompidou Center), the Saison Art Museum in 1987, the Fuji TV Gallery, Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburg, the 1988 Modern Poster Exhibition (New York Museum of Modern Art),  the 1989 Bangladesh Asian Art Biennial, the 1990 Toyama Shimin Plaza, Seed Hall in Shibuya, the 1991 Kirin Plaza Osaka, Sagacho Exhibit Space, and "Beyond JAPAN: A Photo Theatre" (the Barbican Art Gallery, London）.

Born in Hyogo Prefecture. Holds a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (New York) in 1972. Subsequent participation in the biennales of Paris, Venice, Sao Paulo, and Bangladesh place Yokoo on the world stage. His many foreign exhibitions, such as solo exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain (Paris), bring Yokoo international acclaim. The Yokoo Tadanori Museum of Contemporary Art is established in Kobe in 2012. The Teshima Yokoo House is established on Teshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture in 2013. Awarded the 27th Praemium Imperiale in 2015. Yokoo’s works are in the collections of major art museums in Japan and abroad, and solo exhibitions are scheduled in coming years at art museums around the world.

Born in Osaka, he graduated from Tama Art University in 1959 and started working for Light publicity where he handled advertising for Toyo Rayon and Canon Camera among others. He started freelancing in 1968 and became art editor for "Hanashi no Tokushu" in 1965. He did the covers from "Shukan Sankei" between 1968-73 and for "Shukan Bunshun" from 1977. He won the Bunshun Comics Award, the Kodansha Publishing Cultural Book Design Award and the Japan Non-Fiction Award. He directed "Mahjong Meanderings" in 1984 and "Ruby―The Elusive Thief" in 1988.

In 1959 joined Light Publicity after graduating from Tama Art University, and began working independently from 1968. Participated in "Hanashi no Tokushu" magazine as art director. From 1968, in as series that ran for more than 4 years, began drawing caricature covers for "Sakei Weekly." From 1977 to present, of "Weekly Bunshun." Major awards include1974, Kodansha Publication Culture Award (book design), 1997, Mainichi Design Prize. Authored more than 100 published works. Those concerned with design and illustration include, "Design Streetmap," "People," "Poster Land," "Makoto Wada Department Store," "Book Designed by Makoto Wada," "Bookbinding Story," "Caricature Story," and "Time Travel." Also directs movies.

デザインをするときは、あまり頭で練らず、手で面白いかたちを探りますが、「GRAPHIC WEST8: 三重野龍　大全　2011-2019 『屁理屈』」では、タイトルが全然浮かばず、仕事をし始めてから理屈を言い始めた自分への自虐のような言葉をタイトルにしました。漢字の「屁理屈」とひらがなの「へりくつ」が屁のような文字で組み合わさっていますが、当時Contact Gonzoとラトビアに行っていて、そこで見た喫煙マークにインスパイアされてデザインしました。 鳥海さんの「もじのうみ」展は当初は鳥海さんの提案で、平野甲賀さんにタイトルのデザインをお願いする予定だったんですが、残念なことにお亡くなりになってしまったため、急遽僕がデザインすることに。文字をテーマにした展覧会なので、別の新しい文字はつくらないことをルールにして、游ゴシックのパースをさわって見え方を変えています。鳥海さんは「僕がおかしくなったと思われないかな」と心配していましたね（笑）。 dddギャラリーの広報物デザインに限らず、デザインするときには「欲しい」と思ってほしい、ということを意識しています。僕が選んだポスターは、実物は見たことはないものの、現物を見たい／持ち帰りたいと思わされるものを基準にしています。

When I design, I usually try to find interesting forms with my hands, rather than churning my brains. For the Graphic West 8: Ryu Mieno Solo Exhibition 2011-2019 “Quibble,” however, I couldn’t come up with anything for the title. I chose quibble because it’s masochistic, and reflective of the way I began using theory when I started working. I created an interlacing design using the kanji (屁理屈) and kana (へりくつ) for the title, and wound it together like a fart; I went to Latvia with Contact Gonzo back then, and the design was inspired by a smoking mark I saw over there. The title design I did for Osamu Torinoumi Making Type: Like Water, Like Air was originally supposed to be done by Koga Hirano as per Mr. Torinoumi’s request, but he unfortunately passed away, and I was asked to fill the sudden gap. The exhibition was all about characters; I had a rule to not create any separate new characters, so I adjusted the perspective of Yu Gothic to give it a new appearance. Mr. Torinoumi was worried that people might think he had gone crazy (laughs). When I design, regardless of whether it’s for PR materials for ddd gallery or not, I want to create desire in viewers. The posters I chose are standard for those that make viewers want to see things they have never seen before, and take them home.

「Graphic West 6: 熱情と冷静のアヴァンギャルド」を制作した約9年前は、今よりも“マジメ”にデザインに向き合っていたように思います。展示された作品群には、ロシア・アヴァンギャルドからチェコ・アヴァンギャルド、バウハウスやデ・スティルなど、多彩なグラフィックを含んでいたので、特定のデザイン様式には収まらないポスターにしようと考えました。「当時のデザイナーがもしパソコンでレイアウトをしたら？」という仮説を思いつき、無数のレイヤーの前後を自由に変更可能なことも当時との大きな違いの一つだと感じ、多層な情報の奥行きをいかに平面的に定着させるかに腐心しました。全体的な印象はかつての匂いを意識しつつも、例えば書体にしても、いかにもバウハウス的なFuturaそのものは使わないなど、制作していた2013年の空気感も入れられたらと思っていました。今見ると個人的な気負いが感じられて、少し照れくさいですね。

I think I was more ‘serious’ about design when I was working on Graphic West 6: Modern Avant-Garde Graphics about 9 years ago. The selection of works on exhibit included various graphics like Russian Avant-Garde, Czech Avant-garde, Bauhaus, and De Stijl, so I tried to think of a poster that would not fit into any particular design style. I came up with a theory of how designers from days past would layout if they had computers; I felt that one big difference would be the freedom to modify the countless layers. I racked my brains to come up with the best way to set the depth of multi-layered information into a planar composition. Even though I tried to retain a sense of former days in the overall impression the work gives, I was conscious about retaining a sense of the year (2013) when designing the poster. I avoided using Futura, for example, an obvious example of Bauhaus. I sense some personal enthusiasm I had working on it now that I look at it again, which is slightly embarrassing.
