ギンザ・グラフィック・ギャラリーからの巡回展。御年84の仲條氏の全く衰えることのない若々しい感性、模倣すら寄せ付けない圧倒的な存在感を示す作品を紹介した。「MOTHER & OTHERS」をテーマにしたスイスサイズの新作22点、これまで精力的に開いてきた個展で制作された作品の数々、40年以上にわたりアートディレクターを務めた資生堂の企業文化誌『花椿』をズラリと並べた特大の展示台を、銀座とは違い広いワンフロアで展開、迫力のある空間となった。

This exhibition, which originally took place at ginza graphic gallery, introduced works vividly demonstrating the inimitable and overwhelming presence of Masayoshi Nakajo, who, at age 84, continues to create with unfailingly youthful inventiveness. The show featured 22 brand-new outsize posters on the theme of "Mother & Others," numerous works made for his many solo exhibitions held throughout his career, and, set out on extra-large display tables, his plethora of contributions to Hanatsubaki, the cultural magazine of Shiseido, where Nakajo served as art director for more than 40 years. In contrast to the ggg venue, at kyoto ddd gallery the exhibition occupied a single expansive floor, making for a space of powerful impact.

84歳を迎えてますます精力的な創作活動を続けられている仲條氏と美術史家でデザインにも造詣の深い山下氏によるトーク。二人の関係は2005年に仲條氏が声をかけ、代表作『花椿』の「其ノ、ココロハ」というコーナーを山下氏が担当して以来。一見無関係な二つの画像に対して263文字以内でコメントするシリーズ。トークは山下氏が聞き役となり仲條氏の生い立ちから学生時代、資生堂宣伝部からの独立とそれ以降を追った。仲條氏の生誕地にほど近い山下氏の現住所の話に始まり、最盛期には350万部発行という『花椿』や、関西のデザイナーとの関係性について、京都の細見美術館他いくつもの美術館との仕事、そして後半は本展のタイトルにも現れた「対」を多用する軽妙洒脱な「仲條正義のことば」の数々（「アルコールは父、ニコチンは母。」、「傑作は偶然。」、「締め切りが仕上がり。」等々）を紹介し、来場者の笑顔を誘う内容であった。

This Gallery Talk brought together Masayoshi Nakajo, who at age 84 continued his creative activities ever more energetically, and Yuji Yamashita, an art historian with deep knowledge about design. Their relationship traces back to 2005, when Mr. Nakajo invited to take charge of a feature in "Hanatsubaki" magazine, one of his representative works: a series in which Mr .Yamashita was asked to comment, briefly, on two seemingly unrelated images. The talk began with Mr. Yamashita asking Mr. Nakajo about his life, starting from his upbringing and student days to his stint in the advertising department at Shiseido, his going freelance, and his subsequent career. They spoke about how Mr. Yamashita is currently living cllose to where Mr. Nakajo was born, about ha\ow "Hanatsubaki" at its peak had a print run of 3.5 million copies. In the second half they introduced some of the many witty sayings to emanate from Mr. Nakajo, such as: "Father is alcohol, mother is nicotine" and "The deadline is whenever you finish what you're doing."

 Born in Tokyo. In 1956, after graduating from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music (now called Tokyo University of the Arts), where he majored in Design, he joined the advertising department at Shiseido. Later he moved to Deska until 1961, when he established Nakajo Design Office. Nakajo's major work in a career now spanning more than four decades includes: art direction and design for Hanatsubaki, Shiseido's cultural magazine, and for The Ginza / Tactics Design; logo and packaging design for Shiseido Parlour; logo and signage planning for the Tokyo Ginza Shiseido Building; corporate identity (CI) planning for Matsuya Ginza, Wacoal Spiral, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and Hosomi Museum; illustrations for "Nihongo de Asobo" (Let's Play in Japanese), a children's program on NHK; and cover illustrations for Kurashi no Techo magazine. Among his numerous awards received to date are the Tokyo Art Directors Club Members Award Grand Prize, the Tokyo Type Directors Club Members'  Gold Prize, the Yusaku Kamekura Design Award, the Mainichi Design Award, the Japan Advertising Awards' Yamana Prize, and – from the Japanese Government – a Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon and The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette. Nakajo is a member of the Tokyo Art Directors Club, Japan Graphic Designers Association and Tokyo Illustrators Society, and he currently serves as Senior Vice President of the Tokyo Type Directors Club. He is also a visiting professor at Joshibi University of Art and Design.

日本人のコミュニケーションの感覚は、白黒はっきりさせない曖昧なものだと考えます。グラフィックデザインにおいても、西洋のようなシステマティックなデザインではなく、有機的なフォルムをまとった日本らしい表現を好んでいます。 「真 and/or 善」展のポスターは、杉崎真之助氏とふたりでデザインし、それぞれの名前を表す「真」と「善」の文字を自身のスタイルでデザインしたものです。私がデザインした「善」の字は曲線を用いた有機的なフォルムを持ち、境界線をぼやかした曖昧なものになっています。これは「情感と湿度の造形」という考えに基づいたもの。グローバル化が進む時代だからこそ、私はグラフィックデザイナーとしてあえて日本人特有のコミュニケーションの魅力を追求していきたいと考えています。

I believe that intuition in communication between Japanese people has an ambiguity that does not define things as black and white. In regards to graphic design, Japanese prefer unique forms of expression with organic shapes, unlike the systematic design we see in the west. Both Shinnoske Sugisaki and myself designed the poster for the Truth And/Or Virtue Graphic Designs by Shinnoske Sugisaki and Yoshimaru Takahashi Exhibition together, each creating a styled character for the parts of our names, 真 (shin), and 善 (zen). I created an organic form for 善 with curves, to give it indistinct boundary lines. This is based on the idea of form with emotion and warmth. The world is globalizing, but I believe it’s important to adopt a stance to seek out a more appropriately Japanese form of communication through graphic design.
