パリ生まれ。パリの国立高等応用美術学院と国立装飾美術学院に学んだ後、アムステルダムのトータルデザインでダフネ・デュイジュウェルホフの指導のもと勤務。1985年よりオルセー美術館のグラフィックデザイナーとなる。88年、政府の奨学金を獲得し、ロサンゼルスのエイプリル・グレイマンのもとで仕事をする。89年、スタジオを設立。94年、ふたたび政府の奨学金でローマのフランス芸術アカデミーでタイポグラフィの研究に取り組む。92年より国立高等装飾美術学院でタイポグラフィを指導。

パリ生まれ。デュペレ応用美術学校、国立高等装飾美術学校(ENSAD)卒。トータル・デザイン（アムステルダム）での二度のインターンシップを経て、1985年オルセー美術館のグラフィックデザイナーに就任。
1987年に仏外務省より奨学金を得て、オルセーを辞職しロサンゼルスへ。エイプリル・グレイマンのもとで働く。パリへ戻って自身のスタジオ設立。1993年ローマのフレンチアカデミー特別研究員としてヴィラ・メディチにて書体研究と開発にいそしむ。1997年より6年間ルーヴル美術館デザインコンサルタントの後、2008年までアートディレクターとして就任。
1992～98年ENSADにてタイポグラフィを教える。1999年アメリカのロード・アイランド・スクール・オブ・デザイン非常勤の傍ら、ニューヨークのクーパー・ユニオン・スクール・オブ・アートの教授職に応募し常勤の座を得る。2000年にはハーブ・ルバリン・スタディ・センターのキュレーターとなり、2003年にパリへ戻るまで二足のわらじ生活が続く。
主な受賞に1995年東京タイプディレクターズクラブ金賞、2007年香港国際ポスタートリエンナーレ金賞、2009年ISTDアワード大賞（ロンドン）など。2010年にパリで開催された大人気展「イヴ・サンローラン」の展覧会ポスターをデザイン。フォンテーヌブロー・アートヒストリー・フェスティバルやオリエント・エクスプレス、シャトレ座、フランス国立博物館局から銀食器ブランド ピュイフォルカまで、NPO、政府機関、企業など手がけたVIやロゴデザインの件数は数知れず。ジャン・ヌーベルとともにアブダビ・ルーブルの案内表示を手がけ、またモロッコのマラケシュに今秋オープン予定のイヴ・サンローラン美術館のロゴとVIも手がける。
2013年パリ装飾美術館にて初の大回顧展開催。展覧会に併せて、アペロワの30年間にわたる作品を網羅した作品集『Typorama』が同館とテムズ＆ハドソンより出版される。2015年アムステルダムのステデリック・ミュージアムにてタイポグラフィックなポスターにフォーカスした「Using Type」展開催。
AGI会員。2011年芸術文化勲章受章。

Born in Paris. After graduating from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués and École Nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and interned under Daphné Duijvelhoff at Total Design in Amsterdam. He became a graphic designer at the Orsay Museum in 1985. He got a French government scholarship in 1988 and worked for a year under April Greiman in 1988. He established a studio in Paris in 1989 and under toot typography research at France Academy of Art in Rome. He has been teaching typography at the National High Shool of Decorative Art since 1992.


Philippe Apeloig was born in Paris and studied at the École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Duperré and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD). After two transformative internships at Total Design in Amsterdam, he was hired as a graphic designer at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris in 1985.
In 1987, after receiving a scholarship from the French Foreign Ministry, Apeloig left the Orsay and moved to Los Angeles to study and work with April Greiman. On his return to Paris, he established his own studio. In 1993, he won a fellowship at the French Academy in Rome, where he researched and designed typefaces. In 1997, Apeloig became a design consultant for the Louvre, then six years later, its art director, a post he held until 2008.
From 1992 to 1998, Apeloig taught typography at ENSAD. While teaching part-time at the Rhode Island School of Design in the U.S., he applied for and was appointed full-time professor of graphic design at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York. He began his new post in 1999, then was made curator of the School’s Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography in 2000. He held the dual post until 2003, when he returned to Paris to run his own studio.
Apeloig’s design compositions have won numerous prizes, including 1995 Tokyo Type Directors Club Gold Prize, Hong Kong International Poster Triennial 2007 Gold Prize, and the Overall Prize at the 2009 International Society of Typographic Designers Award in London. He contributed to recent blockbuster exhibitions by designing posters for “Yves Saint Laurent” in Paris (2010). Apeloig has also created numerous visual identities and logos for nonprofits, governmental agencies, and businesses ranging from Festival de l'histoire de l'art in Fontainebleau, the Orient Express, the Théâtre du Châtelet, the Direction des Musées de France, and the silversmith Puiforcat.
Apeloig is currently working with Jean Nouvel on the way finding system for the Louvre in Abu Dhabi. He has also created the logo and the corporate visual identity of the forthcoming Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Marrakech.
In 2013, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris presented his first major retrospective. At this occasion the Museum’s and Thames & Hudson published Typorama which brings together 30 years of his graphic work. In 2015, the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam held the exhibition “Using Type” which focused on Apeloig’s typographic posters.
Philippe Apeloig is a longstanding member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale and was made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2011.

日本にはグラフィックデザインを中心に展示するギャラリーがいくつか存在しています。しかし、世界的に見ると、そのような施設はほとんどなく、グラフィックデザイナーの個展やグラフィックデザインをテーマにした企画展が常時行われているこの環境は、かなり特殊なことだといえます。 そのなかの一つであるdddギャラリーは、同じ組織が運営する東京のgggと比べて、オルタナティブな姿勢で活動をしてきたという点でさらに希少な存在だと言えます。著名なデザイナーの個展を軸に据えたgggとは対照的に、dddギャラリーは「日本人がまだ知らない海外デザイナー」の紹介を初期の方針に持ち、その後も東京以西のデザイナーの紹介や他領域のデザイナーの展覧会を行うなど、ここでしか見られない展覧会活動を続けています。 gggからの巡回展が享受できるだけでなく、dddギャラリーでしか見られない展覧会があること。それはデザイナーやデザイン学生にとって恵まれた環境だと思います。このキーワードでは、dddでしか見ることができなかった展覧会をセレクトしています。

There are a few galleries in Japan whose exhibitions pivot around graphic design. If we look overseas however, institutions like these are even rarer; a place where solo graphic design exhibitions and other special exhibitions with graphic design themes happen regularly is quite a special thing. ddd gallery is one of those places; it’s even rarer when you consider that they’ve always maintained an alternative stance compared with ggg in Tokyo (which is also run by DNP Foundation). In stark contrast to ggg, which has a history centered around solo exhibitions of celebrated designers, they have always tried to hold exhibitions with “international designers yet unknown to Japanese,” designers West of Tokyo, and designers from other fields—even now they still continue to hold exhibitions that can’t be seen elsewhere. Where possible, they have avoided being the next leg on touring exhibitions from ggg, choosing to hold their own exhibitions viewable only at ddd Gallery instead. dddギャラリーには国外の気鋭のデザイナーを紹介してきた歴史がありますが、それを最初に提案したのは松井桂三氏。スペインで行われた「JAPAN PRINT」展でスペインを訪れた氏が、３度もスペインの地でDNPの北島義俊社長（当時）に出会ったことで、帰国後に「大阪で年に２〜３回、展覧会企画をお願いしたい」との依頼を受け、「世界の若手〜中堅デザイナーを紹介することができるなら」と提案したことからdddギャラリーのひとつの性格が形作られることになりました。 東京のgggでは有名な国外のデザイナーの展覧会は開かれていましたが、日本人がまだ知らないこれからのデザイナーを紹介する場は当時はなく、dddギャラリーは独自の存在意義をそこに見出すことになりました。松井氏が足で稼いだネットワークが海外との接点となり、そこからアジア・アフリカを含む幅広い海外デザイナーの紹介につながりました（海外では一時はgggよりもdddの方が認知度が高かったという噂も）。 松井氏が企画した展覧会のポスターは自身が手がけていますが、インターネットのない90年代、出展デザイナーとやりとりをするのに時間がかかるため、そして、企画者がデザイナーの松井氏であることが信頼につながっており、情報の少ないデザイナーなどは松井氏のイマジネーションがポスターに強く発揮されています。例えば「ホワイノット・アソシエイツ展（第12回）」のポスターは「why」を手がかりに「？」を針金で作りガーゼを巻き付けガソリンを染み込ませ、燃やして撮影していたり、「ラッセル・ウォーレン-フィッシャー展（第15回）」では「Fish(er)」をモチーフに市場で買ってきた生きたヒラメを撮影したりしてつくられています。インターネット以前のグラフィックデザインを見るうえで貴重な逸話です。 松井氏はdddギャラリーの移転に際し、「これからのグラフィックデザインがどうなるかを考える展覧会が増えることを期待している。未来のことを考え、人々の五感を動かすことがグラフィックデザイナーの仕事」とのメッセージを寄せてくれました。

ddd gallery has a history of showcasing emerging designers from overseas; the initiator of these exhibitions was Keizo Matsui. When visiting Spain for the Japan Print Exhibition held there, he met the president of DNP (at that time), Yoshitoshi Kitajima, three times. After returning to Japan, Kitajima asked Matsui to come up with two or three exhibitions a year in Osaka, and suggested showcasing the world’s young and mid-career designers, which ended up forming part of ddd Gallery’s backbone. Tokyo’s ggg had held exhibitions of famous designers, but in those days no place was showcasing designers yet unknown to the Japanese; in that way, ddd gallery had discovered its own unique reason to exist. The network that Matsui had gained from his travels led to connections with wide reaching introductions of international designers, including those from Asia and Africa (there was also a rumor that, at one stage, ddd was more well-known than ggg internationally). Though Matsui did design the posters for exhibitions he curated, correspondence with exhibiting designers back in the 90s took time without the internet; there was also a lack of information available on these designers. Being a designer, exhibition planner Matsui was hence trusted with the posters, and as a result his imagination is on full display in the designs. For example, for the poster for the 12th Why Not Associates Exhibition, he created a question mark (?) representing ‘why’ with wire, wrapped it in gauze, doused it in gasoline, set it alight, and took photos, and for the 15th Russell Warren-Fisher Exhibition he bought a live flounder from the market as a motif for Fish(er) and photographed it. They now serve as interesting graphic design anecdotes from a pre-internet era. With the most recent relocation of ddd Gallery, Matsui delivered a message that stated, “I hope to see more exhibitions that make us think about what is to become of graphic design. Graphic design should make us think about the future, and rouse the senses of every person.”

Born in Hiroshima, he left Osaka University of Arts. In 1970, he traveled through the Silk Road from Russia and Europe. After the advertising department of Takashimaya, he established the Keizo Matsui Design Office in 1984 and Hundred Design Inc. in 1992. His many awards include the Japan-America Graphic Design Exhibition Silver Award and the Tokyo ADC Award. Recently, he is primarily involved graphic design but also many genre such as packaging, the environment, film, and architecture. He has has exhibition abroad such as "China Graphic Design '96" (China) and "Matsui-Graphkdesign aus Japan" (Germany). His books include "3D Graphics" (Rikuyosha) and "Keizo Matsui: The Graphic Designer" '(Chugoku Seinen Publishing Co.). He is a member of AGI, NY.ADC, Tokyo ADC, Tokyo TDC and is a director of JAGDA.
