世界のポスター史の中で重要な役割を果たしてきた個性あふれるスイスのアーティストたち。多様な文化背景をもつスイスポスター100年の歴史を「アートとポスター」に焦点をあて、ジュネーブ大学附属図書館のポスターコレクションから厳選された代表作50点を紹介。

"On Art and Poster," this exhibition focused and traced the history with various cultural backgrounds of the Switzerland poster over 100 years. The highly individual artists of Switzerland play an important role in the history of posters in the world. By 50 masterpieces selected carefully from the poster collection of The Public Library and University of Geneva, we introduced the path taken by various artistic expressions and history.

Gallery Talk

1530年頃に設立されたジュネーブで最古の公共機関の一つで、スイス国内でも最重要の図書館。中古の写本をはじめ、多くの古書、古地図などの所蔵で知られ、ポスター部門では、約10万点のスイスの主たる作品を数え、定期的な展覧会や会議の主催、研究書籍や図録の発行などにも力を入れている。

Founded around 1530. it is one of Geneva's oldest institution and one of most important libraries in the country. Its collection is very rich. It contains significant ancient collections like manuscripts of the Middle-Ages, ancient books, bibliophiles of geographical maps. Its poster collections reach 100,000 works mainly from Switzerland. The Library regularly organizes exhibitions or talks about posters and often published reference works or catalogues.

デザインをするときは、あまり頭で練らず、手で面白いかたちを探りますが、「GRAPHIC WEST8: 三重野龍　大全　2011-2019 『屁理屈』」では、タイトルが全然浮かばず、仕事をし始めてから理屈を言い始めた自分への自虐のような言葉をタイトルにしました。漢字の「屁理屈」とひらがなの「へりくつ」が屁のような文字で組み合わさっていますが、当時Contact Gonzoとラトビアに行っていて、そこで見た喫煙マークにインスパイアされてデザインしました。 鳥海さんの「もじのうみ」展は当初は鳥海さんの提案で、平野甲賀さんにタイトルのデザインをお願いする予定だったんですが、残念なことにお亡くなりになってしまったため、急遽僕がデザインすることに。文字をテーマにした展覧会なので、別の新しい文字はつくらないことをルールにして、游ゴシックのパースをさわって見え方を変えています。鳥海さんは「僕がおかしくなったと思われないかな」と心配していましたね（笑）。 dddギャラリーの広報物デザインに限らず、デザインするときには「欲しい」と思ってほしい、ということを意識しています。僕が選んだポスターは、実物は見たことはないものの、現物を見たい／持ち帰りたいと思わされるものを基準にしています。

When I design, I usually try to find interesting forms with my hands, rather than churning my brains. For the Graphic West 8: Ryu Mieno Solo Exhibition 2011-2019 “Quibble,” however, I couldn’t come up with anything for the title. I chose quibble because it’s masochistic, and reflective of the way I began using theory when I started working. I created an interlacing design using the kanji (屁理屈) and kana (へりくつ) for the title, and wound it together like a fart; I went to Latvia with Contact Gonzo back then, and the design was inspired by a smoking mark I saw over there. The title design I did for Osamu Torinoumi Making Type: Like Water, Like Air was originally supposed to be done by Koga Hirano as per Mr. Torinoumi’s request, but he unfortunately passed away, and I was asked to fill the sudden gap. The exhibition was all about characters; I had a rule to not create any separate new characters, so I adjusted the perspective of Yu Gothic to give it a new appearance. Mr. Torinoumi was worried that people might think he had gone crazy (laughs). When I design, regardless of whether it’s for PR materials for ddd gallery or not, I want to create desire in viewers. The posters I chose are standard for those that make viewers want to see things they have never seen before, and take them home.
