Prime Minister Obuchi is hospitalized in an emergency during his term of office and passes away suddenly. The ¥2,000 bill is issued to commemorate the Okinawa Summit. The long-term care insurance system is launched. Yoshiro Mori becomes the 85th Prime Minister of Japan in April (and goes on to become re-elected as the 86th Prime Minister).
Graphic Design's Events
Takashi Murakami curates the "Superflat" exhibition, demonstrating his presence not only in the art world, but also in the design community. The "RE DESIGN" exhibition, produced by Kazumasa Nagai receives the 2nd Yusaku Kamekura Design Award. Takeshi Otaka (b. 1926) and Shichiro Imatake (b. 1905) pass away.
