2000年著『タイポグラフィへのわが道』に収録された作品を中心に、大判ポスターやエディトリアル、小型グラフィック、学生時代のノートなども併せて展示するなど、彼のタイポグラフィの集大成的な展示となった。

The exhibition was a comprehensive survey if his typography centered around his works collected in "My Way to Typography," published in 2000, and including large posters editorials, small graphic works and notes from his student days.  

初日にはギャラリートークも開催されたが、初来日ということもあって大阪に続き長岡と東京でもレクチャーが行われた。

A gallery talk was held on the first day. As it was his first visit to Japan, he also lectured in Nagaoka and Tokyo after Osaka.

1963年、植字工としての年季奉公を終了。1968年からバーゼル・デザインスクールで教鞭を執る。1974~96年、アーミン・ホフマンの紹介でブリザゴにてイエール大学グラフィックデザインのサマープログラムのインストラクター。この間13年、ヨーロッパ、北・南アメリカ、アジアそしてニュージーランドでレクチャー。1978~99年、AGI会員。

He completed his apprenticeship in typesetting in 1963. He was an instructor for the graphic design summer program at Yale University from 1974 to 1996 through the introduction of Ermin Hoffman. He was also lecturer in Europe, North and South America, Asia and New Zealand for 13 years during that time. He was an AGI member from 1978 to 1999.

日本にはグラフィックデザインを中心に展示するギャラリーがいくつか存在しています。しかし、世界的に見ると、そのような施設はほとんどなく、グラフィックデザイナーの個展やグラフィックデザインをテーマにした企画展が常時行われているこの環境は、かなり特殊なことだといえます。 そのなかの一つであるdddギャラリーは、同じ組織が運営する東京のgggと比べて、オルタナティブな姿勢で活動をしてきたという点でさらに希少な存在だと言えます。著名なデザイナーの個展を軸に据えたgggとは対照的に、dddギャラリーは「日本人がまだ知らない海外デザイナー」の紹介を初期の方針に持ち、その後も東京以西のデザイナーの紹介や他領域のデザイナーの展覧会を行うなど、ここでしか見られない展覧会活動を続けています。 gggからの巡回展が享受できるだけでなく、dddギャラリーでしか見られない展覧会があること。それはデザイナーやデザイン学生にとって恵まれた環境だと思います。このキーワードでは、dddでしか見ることができなかった展覧会をセレクトしています。

There are a few galleries in Japan whose exhibitions pivot around graphic design. If we look overseas however, institutions like these are even rarer; a place where solo graphic design exhibitions and other special exhibitions with graphic design themes happen regularly is quite a special thing. ddd gallery is one of those places; it’s even rarer when you consider that they’ve always maintained an alternative stance compared with ggg in Tokyo (which is also run by DNP Foundation). In stark contrast to ggg, which has a history centered around solo exhibitions of celebrated designers, they have always tried to hold exhibitions with “international designers yet unknown to Japanese,” designers West of Tokyo, and designers from other fields—even now they still continue to hold exhibitions that can’t be seen elsewhere. Where possible, they have avoided being the next leg on touring exhibitions from ggg, choosing to hold their own exhibitions viewable only at ddd Gallery instead.
