DNPグラフィックデザイン・アーカイブ（DGA）収蔵作品の中から123点を、ライバルと共演する同世代の作家を2人ずつ組み合わせ、作品を対比するかたちで紹介。優れた作品と比較することにより、作品の時代性や作家の個性をより鮮明に浮かびあがらせる試み。


For this exhibition, 123 works were selected from the DNP Graphic Design Archives and displayed in pairs, each pair consisting of works by designers of the same generation. This format served as an experiment employing comparison of outstanding works as a means to bring into sharper relief the timeframe of given works and the individuality of their designers.

Born in Kanda. After having worked at SUN-AD, established Butterfly Stroke in 1999. Produced and directed Kami-Robo and COPET. He is an art director and creative director who handles not only advertising but also graphics and images from planning to presentation. Freely using scribbled sketches and photos or computer generated graphics, he is known for his harp, rousing visual creativity, and has many corporate clients, Member of JAGDA, Tokyo TDC, Tokyo ADC.

Born in Tokyo. after graduating from Kuwasawa Design School in 1962, he worked at advertising design agencies before establishing the Masuteru Aoba Design Office in 1969. His numerous awards include the Asahi Advertising Award, the Brno International Graphic Design Biennale Grand Prix, the Warsaw International Poster Biennale Gold prize, and the New York Art Directors Club International Exhibition Gold Prize. In 1993 he produced the first official poster for the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. He won the JAAC Yamana Prize in 1995, and in 2006 was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon. He is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale, a committee member of the Tokyo Art Directors Club and a director of Japan Graphic Designers Association.

Born in Kanagawa Prefecture, he graduated from the Industrial Art Design Department of Kanagawa Kogyo High School as well as from the Kuwasawa Design Institute. He joined Light Publicity in 1964 ad established the Katsumi Asaba Design Room in 1975. He went to Yunnan, China, in 1990 to fine the illusive Nakhi pictographic script and had a one-man show of new works at the ggg. Recent works in advertising include "Nature is the Model" for the Saison Group, "A Delicious Life" for Seibu Department Store, "Highway of Dreams" for Suntory Old, "A Regular Guy when Drinking" for Suntory White and "Schwarzenegger Eats " for Nissin Foods among others. His many awards include JAAC Honorable Mention in 1985, the ADC Members Award in 1974, 1979 and 1989, the Mainichi Design Award in 1980, the Japan Advertising Prize, Yamana Award in 1989 and the ADC Members Hiromu Hara Award in 1990. He is a member of Tokyo ADC and JAGDA and Chairman of Tokyo TDC.

Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1940. After graduating from Kuwasawa Design School and working at Keinosuke Sato Typography Studio and Light Publicity, he founded Katsumi Asaba Design Studio in 1975. Many of his creations as an art director have made a lasting mark in the history of Japanese advertising design. Representative works include landmark ads for Seibu Department Stores, Suntory and Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, and package design for Kirin tea. Asaba is an expert on Dongba, an ancient pictorial script still used in some areas of China. He has received numerous awards, including the Japan Advertising Artists Club Special Prize, Tokyo Type Directors Club Award, Mainichi Design Prize, Japan Advertising Awards Yamana Prize, Japan Academy Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction, Tokyo Art Directors Club Grand Prix, and two decorations from the Japanese Government: a Medal with Purple Ribbon; and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette. Asaba is chairman of the Tokyo Type Directors Club, a committee member of the Tokyo Art Directors Club, president of JAGDA (Japan Graphic Designers Association), Japan representative in the Alliance Graphique Internationale, director of Kuwasawa Design School, and visiting professor at Tokyo Zokei University and Kyoto Seika University. He has a 6th level ranking in table tennis.

Born in Miyazaki Prefecture. In 1978 he established Beans. He has performed art direction and creative advertising for numerous publications, music, television, etc., for Parco, Suntory, Comme de Garçons, and The Asahi Simbun. Among the many prizes he has won to date are the Tokyo ADC Grand Prize, Tokyo TDC Members Award and the Mainichi Advertising Award. He is a member of Tokyo ADC, Tokyo TDC and JAGDA.

He established his own company, Beans Co., Ltd., in 1978. Through the years he has forged a prominent career as a graphic designer and art director, the latter area encompassing the realms of advertising, music, publishing, and TV. Today, with innovative creations integrating photography and typography, his design work continues to span across multiple genres. Inoue's major awards received to date include the Tokyo ADC Grand Prize, Tokyo TDC Grand Prize, JAAC Yamana Prize and Mainichi Design Award. His major publications are "ggg Books-64 Tsuguya Inoue," "Inoue Tsuguya Graphic Works 1981-2007" (Little More), and "Inoue Tsuguya Graphics: Talking the Dragon" (Little More).

Born in Sapporo, Hokkaido Prefecture, Kasai Kaoru joined SUN-AD Company Limited in 1973 after stints working at Bunka Printing Co., Ltd. and Ohtani Design. He currently serves as advisor at SUN-AD Company Limited. His creative activities span a wide range, including advertising and art direction for Suntory Oolong Tea, United Arrows, Toraya Confectionery, and TORAYA CAFÉ, as well as corporate identity and signage, graphics and title design for films and theaters, and book design. Major awards received include the Tokyo ADC Grand Prix, Hiromu Hara Memorial Prize, Mainichi Design Award, and the Yusaku Kamekura Design Award. His publications include KASAI Kaoru 1968 (Art Design Publishing).

His field is visual design, primarily focused on visually infusing information into graphic design. His range of activities is remarkably wide, including art direction of numerous expositions, design education, and serving as a judge at international competitions. He is a member of Tokyo ADC and AGI and serves as a director of JAGDA. He is Professor Emeritus at Musashino Art University.

Born in Niigata Prefecture. He established the Nippon Design Center in 1960. After receiving the Grand Prize from the Ministry of Education, he began freelancing. Since that time, he was won numerous awards both in Japan and throughout the world. These have included the Purple Ribbon Medal, the Asahi Award, the Mainichi Art Award, the Third Class Order of the Sacred Treasure, The Cultural Meritorious Service Medal, the Warsaw International Poster Biennale Special Art Award, and the Lahti International Poster Biennale Grand Prix. In 1994, he received  the Mainichi Design Special Award for editing the 20 volume design magazine, "Creation." In the same year he also received an honorary doctorate from the Warsaw Academy of Art. He was chairman of JAGDA and is Chairman of the Board of the Japan Design Committee. Books: "Yusaku Kamekura's Designs" and "Yusaku Kamekura's Outspoken Flight."

He was the editor of "Creation" magazine focused on international graphic design, art and illustration and was awarded Mainichi Design Award and Tokyo ADC Members' Award for the 20 total issues in 1994. He was given the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the academy of Fine Arts, Warsaw in 1994. 種子島生まれ。1976年CGの黎明期よりCG（コンピュータ・グラフィックス）によるプログラミング造形の研究に着手。数理アルゴリズムにより導き出された自己組織的手法のグロースモデルにより、独自の作品群で世界的注目を集める。2000年頃から、インタラクティブアート・ジェモーション（Gemotion）の研究作品は後にVR/ARへの応用やプロジェクションマッピングの世界に先駆ける。ベネチアビエンナーレ‘95日本館代表作家。またロレアル大賞など、国際賞のグランプリを1980年代から多数受賞。2010年ACM Siggraph’10でディスティングリッシュト アーティストアワード フォ ライフタイムアチーブメント受賞。2018年にはフランスBNN Prix D’Honneur栄誉賞、さらにSiggraph Academy殿堂入りを果たす。国内では、2013年、芸術選奨文部科学大臣賞受賞、同年、紫綬褒章を受章。文化庁メディア芸術祭ファウンダー、初代総合審査委員長。現在、DCAJ会長、霧島アートの森館長や多数のメディア系大会審査委員長等を務める。

Born on Tanegashima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, Yoichiro Kawaguchi began research in creating designs using programming and computer graphics in 1976, just as the age of computer graphics was beginning, and went on to garner international attention with his unique works drawing on technological methods based on mathematical algorithms. From around year 2000, Kawaguchi’s research project exploring interactive art, “Gemotion,” became one of the pioneer projects that opened the way to the world of VR and AR application and projection mapping. He was a participating artist at the Japan Pavilion for the 1995 Venice Biennale, and has received a number of major awards in international contests since the 1980s, including a L’Oréal Art & Science Foundation Grand Prize, the Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement at ACM Siggraph 2010, and a Prix D’Honneur at the festival Bains Numériques in France in 2018. In the same year he was also inducted into the Siggraph Academy. The awards he has received in Japan include the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize, and the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon, both in 2013. He was a founder of the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Japan Media Arts Festival and first chair of the overall judging panel, and currently holds positions as chairman of the Digital Content Association of Japan, director of the Kirishima Open-Air Museum, and chairs numerous judging panels for media-related contests, among other roles.

京都生まれ。1977年アメリカ・カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校デザイン科大学院修士課程卒業。在学中から同大学デザイン科の助手を勤め、ビデオ、コンピュータ・グラフィックス部門で学生の指導に携わる。帰国後、五十嵐威暢デザイン事務所を経て、1983年ポリゴン・ピクチュアズを設立。現在、千葉大学非常勤講師。主な作品にはビデオディスク「映像の先駆者」シリーズ全6巻、コンピュータ・グラフィックス映像「In Search of New Axis」、「Dancing Sony」、「In Search of Muscular Axis」など。1991年東京タイポディレクターズクラブ会員部門金賞受賞。著書に『河原敏文作品集：DANCING ALPHABET』（六耀社）。

Born in Kyoto, he got his M.A. in design from UCLA in 1977 and was a teaching assistant in video and computer graphics. In Japan, he worked in the Takenobu Igarasghi Design Studio before established Polygon Pictures in 1983. Main works include a 6-disc video disc series, and in computer graphics, "Dancing Sony," and "In Search of performing Axis" among others. He won the 1991 Tokyo Typo-Directors Club Members' Gold Award and published "a Collection of Works by Toshifumi Kawahara: Dancing Alphabet" (Rikuyosha).

Born in Hyogo Prefecture. Graduated from University of Tsukuba. Head Designer of GRAPH. Kitagawa was cited in "New Blood" as one of 20 contemporary Japanese "movers and shakers" in the realms of art and design. His works featured in "Idea" grabbed the attention of designers worldwide, leading to his selection to serve on the juries of the D&AD and NY ADC. His works are in the permanent collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. In 2008, he exhibited at London's Frieze Art Fair. Recipient of numerous awards including JAGDA New Designer Award and Tokyo TDC Award. Member of AGI.

宇都宮市生まれ。戦後、進駐軍がもたらした数々のアメリカのパッケージに衝撃を受け、1960年パッケージディレクションを設立。パッケージデザイナーの先駆者として、1968年からパッケージの新しい在り方を提案する個展を開催。明るくリズミカルなデザインで独自の世界をつくり出す。活動は国内にとどまらず、NYブルーミングデール百貨店のショッピングバッグのデザインなども手がける。1967年ニューヨーク・トップパッケージング賞、1981年東京ADC賞、1985年日本パッケージデザイン大賞特賞、2003年日本パッケージデザイン大賞金賞など受賞多数。著書に『木村勝のパッケージディレクション』『アール・デコのパッケージ』など。東京ADC、東京TDC、JAGDA会員。

Born in Utsunomiya, Katsu Kimura was inspired by the American packages brought by the Occupation forces after the War and established himself as a package designer in 1960. As a pioneer in the field of package design, his first solo exhibition in 1968 proposed  a new concept of packaging. He uses lively, rhythmical designs to create his own unique world. Kimura's activities are not limited to Japan, and he counts the design of shopping bags for Bloomingdale's Department Store in New York among his projects. His numerous awards include the New York Top Packaging Award, the Tokyo Art Directors Club Award, and the Japan Package Design Award special Prize and Golden Prize. He is a member of the Tokyo Art Directors Club and the Japan Graphic Designers Association.

福岡生まれ。1980年代、グラフィックデザイン界に衝撃的デビューを果たし、以来、ワルシャワ国際ポスタービエンナーレ金賞、NY ADC金賞、ラハティ国際ポスタービエンナーレグランプリ、東京ADCグランプリなど国内外問わず受賞多数。ニューヨーク近代美術館など世界20ヶ所以上の近代美術館に作品が永久保存。著書に『サイトウ・マコト・ポスターズ』、『サイトウ・マコトの仕事の周辺』などがある。日本文化デザイン会議、東京ADC、AGI会員。JAGDA副会長、毎日デザイン賞選考委員ほか。

Born in Fukuoka Prefecture, he graduated from Kokura Kogyou High School. Recent awards include the 1984 Warsaw International Poster Biennial Gold Award, the Silver of 1985, 1988 and 1991, the 1987 Mainichi Design Award, the New York ADC International Exhibition Gold Award in 1987, 1988 and 1989, the 1989 Lahti International Poster Biennial Exhibition Grand Prize, the French Poster Exhibition Grand Prize, the highest award at the Colorado International Poster Invitation Exhibition, the 1990 Bruno International Graphic Design Biennial Exhibition Silver Award, the French Poster International Exhibition Grand Prize and the 1991 Lahti Poster Biennial Special Prize. His works re in the New York Museum of Modern Art, National Museum of Applied Art, The Warsaw Poster Museum, the Lahti Art Museum, the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Modern Art, Toyama and the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art.

東京生まれ。1989年多摩美術大学グラフィックデザイン科卒業。ド年、博報堂入社。商品のブランド開発、CIからプロダクト、店舗、空間、広告キャンペーンまで幅広く手がける。2000年5月博報堂退社後、クリエイティブスタジオ「SAMURAI」を設立。以来、既存の枠組みにとらわれることなくアートディレクションの新しい可能性を提示し続けている。東京ADCグランプリ、亀倉雄策賞、ニューヨークフェスティバル銀賞など受賞多数。現在はCIや幼稚園リノベーションのクリエイティブディレクション、化粧品のブランド開発、プロダクトデザインなど、既存の枠組みにとらわれず、多方面にわたってアートディレクションの力を発揮するプロジェクトが進行中。

Born in Tokyo. Received a degree in graphic design from Tama Art University in 1989 and joined Hakuhodo that same year. While working at the advertising agency, he handled everything from product development an CI design to packaging, shop and advertising promotional campaigns. In May 2000, he left Hakuhodo and founded the creative studio, Samurai. He has continued to demonstrate new possibilities in art direction without being constrained by existing paradigms. His main awards include the Tokyo ADC Grand Prize, Yusaku Kamekura Award and the New York Festival Silver Prize. at present he is working as a creative director on corporate identity projects and kindergarten renovations, and doing brand development and product designs for cosmetic firms. The projects demonstrate his ability to work as an art director in multiple fields without being constrained by the traditional boundaries separating them.

Born in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture. He graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (now, Tokyo University of the Arts) with a degree in Visual Design. After initially working in the advertising department of Shiseido, he went freelance in 1971. He won a Tokyo ADC Award in 1985, a Mainichi Design Award in 1991, and the Education Minister’s Art Encouragement Prize for young artists in 1997. He has also won numerous awards at international poster competitions, including at the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). His works are part of permanent collections at many art museums both in Japan and abroad. Mr. Sato is presently a member of JAGDA, AGI, Japan Design Committee, Tokyo ADC and Tokyo TDC. He is best known for his unique style of expression acclaimed for its Oriental touch, but in recent years he has been working with other modes of free expression. He is a professor at Tama Art University.

Involved in planning and art direction of the "Nihongo de Asobo" TV Program on the NHK educational channel, and the "Analysis of the Mass-product Design" project. Member of Tokyo ADC, Tokyo TDC, JAGDA, AGI.

Born in Tokyo. His real name is Yuji SAto. He left Tokyo Gakugei University but graduated from the Kuwasawa Design Institute. He established the Design Farm in 1975 after working in the Oka Studio. His awards include the 1977 New York  ADC "Japanese Graphic Design Exhibition" Silver Medal, the 1978 Bruno Graphic Design Biennale Gold Medal, the 1979 Lahti Poster Biennale Gold Medal, and the 1989 Bulgaria Artists Union Award. Among his many one-man shows at home and abroad are "My Theory of Evolution" (Gallery Okabe) in 1972, "U.G. Sato Poster Exhibition" (La Salle Museum of Art, Italy). Books: "The Personal Theory of Evolution by U.G. Sato," "In the Fantastic Zoo," "The Two-legged and The Four-legged" and "Wooden Boxes."

Born on Ukashima in Yamaguchi, the last of eight children in a fisherman’s family. In his fourth year of elementary school, he became enthralled by poster art under the influence of a teacher. After graduating from Osaka Designers' College, he began working in Osaka, and came to know of and admire Shin Matsunaga; he finally joined Matsunaga's studio in 1984. He later worked for Taki Corporation and I&S/BBDO, and then in 1995 he established Shinmura Design Office. He is a member of JAGDA and the New York ADC.

His awards include the Mainichi Industrial Design Award, the Recommended Artist's Award from the Ministry of Education, Japan, the ADC Gold Awards, the Tokyo ADC Awards of Excellence, and the Mainichi Art Award. He was accepted to the NY ADC Hall and has received the purple Ribbon Medal. He has been the art director of the Saison Group since 1973. He is currently the Tokyo ADC chairman, and an AGI member. Born in Osaka, Mr Nagai attended Tokyo National University of Fine Arts an Music until withdrawing in 1951. In 1960 he participated in the founding of Nippon Design Center, where he currently serves as Senior Executive Advisor. He has created numerous symbols through the years, including for the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics, Expo'75 in Okinawa and Asahi Breweries. He has also designed a broad range of posters for corporate advertising, musical performances, exhibitions, etc., and overseas. Mr. Nagai is a member of Tokyo ADC and AGI.

Born in Osaka, Kazumasa Nagai attended Tokyo National University of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts), where he studied Sculpture until withdrawing in 1951. In 1960, he participated in the founding of the Nippon Design Center, together with Ikko Tanaka and other up-and-coming young designers. In 1975 Mr. Nagai became that organization’s president, and he currently serves as its chief executive advisor. He also serves as special advisor to JAGDA.
During his long career he has created logomarks, CI and posters for numerous clients including: the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics, Okinawa Expo ’75, Ibaraki and Niigata prefectures, Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA), Asahi Breweries, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, etc. In the late 1980s Mr. Nagai launched his “LIFE” series featuring flora and fauna motifs, and in 2003 his creative endeavors expanded to copperplate printmaking.
He has won a host of awards, both global and domestic: Tokyo ADC Grand Prize, Yusaku Kamekura Design Award, Mainichi Design Award, Mainichi Art Award, Himeji Cultural Arts Grand Prize, Warsaw International Poster Biennale Gold Prize, and International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno Grand Prize. From the Japanese Government he has received the prestigious Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts, Medal with Purple Ribbon, and Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.
Mr. Nagai’s works are included in the permanent collections of more than 20 museums worldwide, including the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design, Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA), and Metropolitan Museum of Art.

 Born in Tokyo. In 1956, after graduating from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music (now called Tokyo University of the Arts), where he majored in Design, he joined the advertising department at Shiseido. Later he moved to Deska until 1961, when he established Nakajo Design Office. Nakajo's major work in a career now spanning more than four decades includes: art direction and design for Hanatsubaki, Shiseido's cultural magazine, and for The Ginza / Tactics Design; logo and packaging design for Shiseido Parlour; logo and signage planning for the Tokyo Ginza Shiseido Building; corporate identity (CI) planning for Matsuya Ginza, Wacoal Spiral, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and Hosomi Museum; illustrations for "Nihongo de Asobo" (Let's Play in Japanese), a children's program on NHK; and cover illustrations for Kurashi no Techo magazine. Among his numerous awards received to date are the Tokyo Art Directors Club Members Award Grand Prize, the Tokyo Type Directors Club Members'  Gold Prize, the Yusaku Kamekura Design Award, the Mainichi Design Award, the Japan Advertising Awards' Yamana Prize, and – from the Japanese Government – a Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon and The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette. Nakajo is a member of the Tokyo Art Directors Club, Japan Graphic Designers Association and Tokyo Illustrators Society, and he currently serves as Senior Vice President of the Tokyo Type Directors Club. He is also a visiting professor at Joshibi University of Art and Design.

Born in Iwate Prefecture, he graduated from Tokyo Art School in 1948. He joined the Shiseido advertising department in 1948 and after becoming General Manager of Advertising with a ranking equal to a director while also General Manager of Production, he is now a full-time advisor. He got the Japan Advertising Artists Club Special Mention and Members Award, the Tokyo ADC Award, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Members Awards. The Asahi Advertising Award, the Mainichi Advertising Award, the Warsaw International Biennial Gold and and Special Mention Awards, the Kinugasa Award, the Yamana Award, and the Advertising Dentsu Award. He was invited to exhibit at the "Mona Lisa Smile Exhibition" at the Louvre Decorative Art Museum, Paris, the Warsaw International Biennial, the "12 Japanese Artists Poster Exhibition" (Paris), the "10 Artists World Poster Exhibition" (Tokyo), and the "Graphic Design of Today" (Tokyo Museum of Modern Art).

Received a Master of Fine Arts degree from that institution in 1983. Born in Osaka. In 1936, graduated from Osaka City Kogei High School (Design Course). After stints working in the advertising department of Mitsukoshi and Kintetsu department stores, went freelance in 1952. His main awards include the Osaka Arts Prize in 1954; the 1st Mainichi Industrial Design Award (today's Mainichi Design Award) om 1955; also became a member of AGI: participated in "Graphic'55" exhibition. In 1960, he served as a panelist at the World Industrial Design Conference and in 1970, participated in the basic color planning for the World Expo in Osaka. In 1981, he received the 12th Kodansha Culture Award in Publishing, in 1982, was awarded a Medal with a Purple Ribbon by the Japanese Government and in 1984, received the 5th Yamana Prize. In 1988, was awarded the Fourth Order of the Rising Sun Medal by the Japanese Government. In 1996, was inducted into the Tokyo ADC Hall of Fame. His works are in the permanent collections in many museums around the world. His main publications include "The World of Yoshio Hayakawa," the collection of essays, "Feeling to Pass the Time," and a collection of dialogues, "In Between Emptiness and Substance."

武蔵野美術大学教授。2002年より、無印良品のアートディレクションを担当。「もの」ではなく「こと」のデザインを志向している。「RE-DESIGN」「HAPTIC]「SENSEWARE」など既存の価値観を更新するキーワードを擁する展覧会を制作し、世界に巡回。また、長野オリンピックの開・閉会式プログラムや、愛知万博のプロモーションでは、深く日本文化に根ざしたデザインを展開した。一連のデザイン活動によって日本文化デザイン賞ほか受賞多数。著書多数。

He is a professor at Musashino Art University, and prolific writer. Since 2002 he has served as art director for MUJI. He aspires to designing "states" rather than "things." Among his creations are exhibitions - which have toured worldwide - embracing key words that overturn pre-exciting valued: for example, "RE-DESIGN," "HAPTIC" and "SENSEWARE." Meanwhile, for his design of the programs for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and his promotional campaign for AICHI EXPO 2005, he developed designs deeply rooted in Japanese culture. For his design activities he has garnered numerous awards, including the Japan Inter-Design Forum Award.

Born in Hyogo Prefecture. Established Hirano Studio in 1997, then in 2005 together with Aoshi Kudo she founded Communication Design Laboratory (CDL). Her major works to date include: symbol design and visual identity planning for the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; total art direction for launching Shiseido's "qiora" cosmetics in the U.S. and NTT DoCoMo's "F702iD Shosa" mobile phone series; planning, configuration and venue design for the "Icons of the Times: 50 Years of Japanese Graphic Design" exhibition. She has won numerous awards to date.

装丁家、グラフィックデザイナー

1938年生まれ。装丁家、グラフィックデザイナー。武蔵野美術学校デザイン科卒業。高島屋宣伝部を経てフリーとなる。64年から晶文社の装丁を手がける。また演劇集団黒テントの活動に長く携わる。73年「ワンダーランド」創刊。78年「水牛通信」「水牛楽団」参加。84年「講談社出版文化賞」ブックデザイン賞受賞。

父の赴任先京城（現：ソウル）に生まれる。1957年 武蔵野美術大学の前身、武蔵野美術学校に入学。在学中の1960年、当時グラフィックデザイナーにとっての登竜門的存在であった日宣美展（日本宣伝美術会）において『見る前に跳べ』（大江健三郎の小説）で特選を受賞。卒業後、高島屋宣伝部に入社、その後フリーのグラフィックデザイナーとなる。
1964年から1992年の30年弱にわたり晶文社の装丁を一手に担う。ひとりのデザイナーが一社の装丁を全て手掛けるのは稀有なことであり、当時のカウンター・カルチャーの旗手であった晶文社のスタイルを作り上げ、出版会に旋風を巻き起こした。装丁の仕事は他社にもひろがり、独特の「描き文字」、躍動するデザインの装丁は現在に至るまで7000冊におよぶ。
1960年代半ばから平野は晶文社の編集長でもあった畏友　津野海太郎とともに演劇活動に参加。六月劇場、劇団黒テントを中心に演劇ポスターやチラシをつくり、舞台装置も手がけた。
1973年 植草甚一編集雑誌『ワンダーランド』のアートディレクターとなり、新鮮な誌面づくりはいまだに伝説として語り継がれている。
1978年から高橋悠治らが始めたバンド「水牛楽団」、アジア民衆文化通信『水牛通信』の活動に加わり、演劇活動とは別の表現方法を獲得していく。これはいまでも平野甲賀の根底を流れている。
2005年から2013年、神楽坂上の岩戸町に小劇場「シアターイワト」をオープン。
2014年より香川県小豆島に移住。


Born in Keijo, Korea(now Seoul),where his father was posted on business.
1957: Entered Musashino Art School, forerunner to today's Musashino Art University. While still a student in 1960, Hirano was awarded a special prize for his work on Kenzaburo Oe's Leap Before You Look  by the Japan advertising Artists Club, then considered a gateway to success for graphic designers. After graduation, he joined Takashimaya Department Store's advertising department, and later went freelance as a graphic designer.
For nearly 30 years between 1964 and 1992, Hirano served as the solo cover designer for Shobunsha. Indeed, it is a rare feat for a single designer to handle all of a publisher's output. Shobunsha was the standard-bearer of the counterculture in those day's, and Hirano's unique style blew a breath of fresh air through the publishing establishment.
this led to work from other clients, and Hirano's distinctive "decorative text" and dynamic designs graced the covers of some 7,000 books.
In the mid-1960s, Hirano began participating in theater along with Kaitaro Tsuno, his esteemed friend and also an editor at Shobunsha.
Give his talents, he was drafted to make posters, flyers, and even stage decorations for troupes such as Rokugatsu Gekijo and the Black Tent Theatre.
1973: Hirano was appointed art director of "Wonderland" magazine, edited by Jinichi Uekusa, and his vibrant page designs become the stuff of legend.
1978: Hirano joins Suigyu Gakudan, a band formed by Yuji Takahashi et al, and joined the staff of "Suigyu Tsushin," a newsletter reporting on Asian popular culture, finding new outlets for his creativity. The influence of there activities can still be seen in Hirano's works today.
2005-2013: Hirano opened Theatre Iwato, a small theater in Iwato-cho in Tokyo's Kagurazaka district.
2014: Hirano relocated to Shodo Island in Kagawa Prefecture.

日本デザイナー学院広島校卒業後、上京。浅葉克己デザイン室を経て、1985年ADK入社。1999年福島デザイン設立。2010年より「デザインにおける社会貢献の可能性」を探求するため、数多くのソーシャルプロジェクトを企画、実施している。障がい者アートライブラリー「Artbility」の活動支援をはじめ、東日本大震災の被災地支援活動として「UNICEF祈りのツリープロジェクト」、「JAGDAやさしいハンカチ展」などの企画、実施を行っている。

After graduating from the Hiroshima branch of Nippon Designers School, he relocated to Tokyo and joined the design office of Katsumi Asaba. He remained there until 1985 when he joined  ADC, staying there until he went freelance in 1999. since 2010, looking for possible ways of making social contributions through design, Mr. Fukushima has planned and carried out numerous social projects. These include two activities in support of regions affected by the Great East japan Earthquake: UNESCO's "Player Tree Project" and the JAGDA exhibition "Handkerchiefs for Tohoku Children."

Hosoya Gan was born in Kanagawa prefecture and graduated from the Department of Technical Design at Kanagawa Technical Senior High School in 1953. He joined Light Publicity Co., Ltd. in the same year.
Hosoya is currently chairman of the Board of Directors at Light Publicity. He also serves as chairman of the Tokyo Art Directors Club (ADC) and he is a member of the Japan Graphic Design Association Inc. Hosoya's awards include the Japan Advertising Artists Club (JAAC) Special Selection (1955, 1956), the Tokyo ADC Gold and Silver Prizes (1959), the Mainichi Industrial Design Award (jointly awarded, 1966), the JAAC Member Award (collaboration, 1967),  the Tokyo ADF Members Grand Prize (1971, 1978, 1984, and 1988), the Asahi Advertising Award Grand Prize (1988), the Japan Advertising Award Yamana Prize (1990), the Medal with Purple Ribbon (2001), and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette (2014).

Born in Tokyo, he graduated in design course of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1964, and joined in the advertising division of Shiseido. In 1971 he founded Shin Matsunaga Design. His work centers on posters, CI designs and other graphic design, but his creative activities also cover a wide range including drawings and monuments. His works are in the permanent collections of 46 museums around the world. He received numerous awards, including the Mainichi Design Award and International Poster Biennale, Warsaw Gold Medal.

Born in Tokyo in 1940. After completing the design course at Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music (now, Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1964, he initially worked in the advertising division of Shiseido Co., Ltd. In 1971 he founded Shin Matsunaga Design Inc. Mr. Matsunaga’s creative activities center on graphic design, including posters, corporate identity (CI) planning and packaging, but also run a broad gamut from drawings and sculpture to monuments. His major works to date include: summer campaigns for Shiseido; a series of peace posters; total graphics for Sezon Museum of Art; CI planning for Benesse Corporation, Issey Miyake and The National Museum of Western Art; and package design for Scottie tissues, Can Chu-Hi beverage, Shiseido “uno” men’s cosmetics, and the French cigarette brand Gitanes (finishing 1st in an international competition).

Born in Kobe, he established the design studio Ken Miki & Associates in 1982. His comprehensive designing activities include the promotion of the IBM ThinkPad for IBM Japan, the corporate identity for Keikyu Department Store, Dowa Fire and Marine Insurance, the symbol for World Environment Day Tokyo, the sign plans for Keio University Shonan Fujisawa campus and promotion of Heiwa Paper. His many awards at home and abroad include the JAGDA Newcomer's Award, NY ADC Special Award, Tokyo TDC Member's Bronze Award, Japan Typography Annual Grand Prix. He is a member of JAGDA, Tokyo TDC, JTA and AGI.

Throughout his career he has undertaken “design by talking” – developing a design by a process similar to speaking – and “design by listening” – designing by probing the origins of things. Working from an underlying theme of “realizing from realization,” he infuses emotional communication into serene expression. His major works to date include the kit for the 2003 Icograda Congress in Nagoya, promotion of the ThinkPad for IBM Japan, Ltd., logomarks for BELLE MAISON, Osaka University of Pharmaceutical Sciences, KEIKYU Department Store, etc. In recent years a book about his “Apple” project – subtitled “Learning to Design, Designing to Learn” – was published in Switzerland (Lars Müller Publishers) for worldwide circulation. Among the numerous prizes he has received at home and abroad to date are the JAGDA New Designer Award, Japan Typography Annual Grand Prix, Tokyo Type Directors Club Bronze Award, International Poster Triennial in Toyama Silver Prize, New York Art Directors’ Club Bronze Award, etc. In addition to “APPLE,” he has also published “Ken Miki Selected Works 1994-2002” (amus arts press). 山形県生まれ。早稲田大学大学院理工学部研究科修了。慶應義塾大学理工学部非常勤講師。建築、ランドスケープ、グラフィック、プロダクト、家具、写真、アート、彫刻、評論を手がける。ワルシャワ国際ポスタービエンナーレ特別賞（1980）／金賞（1990）、原弘賞（1988）、桑沢賞（1995）、講談社出版文化賞ブックデザイン賞（1995）、勝見勝賞（1999）等。『VISION OFJAPAN』（1991）ほか著書、作品集多数。また建築作品「市川の家」（2003）で2004年千葉県建築文化奨励賞、「コンカード横浜」（2008）で神奈川県建築コンクール奨励賞を受賞。

Born in Yamagata Prefecture. Graduated from Waseda University with a degree in Creative Science and Engineering (Architecture). Currently an instructor in the Faculty of Science and Technology of Keio University. actively engaged in architecture, landscape design graphic design, product design, furniture design, photography, fine art, sculpture and criticism. Among his architectural works, "House of Ichikawa" (2003) won the 2003 "Selected Architecture Design" award from Chiba Prefecture, and "Concurred Yokohama" (2008) an award of merit in the Kanagawa Architecture Competition.

Born in Tokyo. He spent 2 years at the Kuwasawa Design Institute from 1965. He became a freelance designer and illustrator in 1967, participated in the "100% Studio Exhibition" in 1971 and handed the cover of the magazine, "Tide," from 1981 to 1990. Books: "Nobuhiko Yabuki Landscapes" and "Happy Scenes" among others.

Born in Osaka. In 1967 graduated from Osaka University of Arts with a concentration in design and joined Shiseido. After stints as art director and creative director, currently head of Shiseido's Design Creation Group. In 1982-86 served as company's first representation in Paris, collaborating with Serge Lutens. Recent activities include exhibitions at the Nantenshi Gallery in 1982, 1984 and 1991, the 1985 Paris Biennial, the San Paulo Biennial, "Tokyo Form and Spirit" in 1986 (Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art and a U.S. tour), "Japanese Avant-Garde Art 1910-1970" (Paris, Pompidou Center), the Saison Art Museum in 1987, the Fuji TV Gallery, Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburg, the 1988 Modern Poster Exhibition (New York Museum of Modern Art),  the 1989 Bangladesh Asian Art Biennial, the 1990 Toyama Shimin Plaza, Seed Hall in Shibuya, the 1991 Kirin Plaza Osaka, Sagacho Exhibit Space, and "Beyond JAPAN: A Photo Theatre" (the Barbican Art Gallery, London）.

Born in Hyogo Prefecture. Holds a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (New York) in 1972. Subsequent participation in the biennales of Paris, Venice, Sao Paulo, and Bangladesh place Yokoo on the world stage. His many foreign exhibitions, such as solo exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain (Paris), bring Yokoo international acclaim. The Yokoo Tadanori Museum of Contemporary Art is established in Kobe in 2012. The Teshima Yokoo House is established on Teshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture in 2013. Awarded the 27th Praemium Imperiale in 2015. Yokoo’s works are in the collections of major art museums in Japan and abroad, and solo exhibitions are scheduled in coming years at art museums around the world.

Born in Osaka, he graduated from Tama Art University in 1959 and started working for Light publicity where he handled advertising for Toyo Rayon and Canon Camera among others. He started freelancing in 1968 and became art editor for "Hanashi no Tokushu" in 1965. He did the covers from "Shukan Sankei" between 1968-73 and for "Shukan Bunshun" from 1977. He won the Bunshun Comics Award, the Kodansha Publishing Cultural Book Design Award and the Japan Non-Fiction Award. He directed "Mahjong Meanderings" in 1984 and "Ruby―The Elusive Thief" in 1988.

In 1959 joined Light Publicity after graduating from Tama Art University, and began working independently from 1968. Participated in "Hanashi no Tokushu" magazine as art director. From 1968, in as series that ran for more than 4 years, began drawing caricature covers for "Sakei Weekly." From 1977 to present, of "Weekly Bunshun." Major awards include1974, Kodansha Publication Culture Award (book design), 1997, Mainichi Design Prize. Authored more than 100 published works. Those concerned with design and illustration include, "Design Streetmap," "People," "Poster Land," "Makoto Wada Department Store," "Book Designed by Makoto Wada," "Bookbinding Story," "Caricature Story," and "Time Travel." Also directs movies.
